ON e-Test & Hot Rods

Anyone had their Camaro or Bird e-Tested in Ontario under the "Hot Rod" exemption rule? I've searched, in vain, for references to the "Hot Rod" exemption on any Gov't of Ontario web site. The guys at CarQuest told me today about it. I'd never heard of it before but apparently if you meet certain conditions (which is what I'm trying to find out) they set the test limits a lot higher. Anybody?

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

See Post #19. But read the entire thread, theres good info in there.

Bottom line, forget about the HotRod Status, you wont be able to get it.

"A hot rod that receives a motor replacement on or after January 1, 1999, shall receive a motor designed to meet emission standards at least as stringent as those achieved by the original motor with all its original emission control equipment attached and functioning, and the replacement motor shall have the original catalytic converter and all the original emission control equipment, or equivalent replacements, included or usually included with the replacement motor by the manufacturer of the motor. O. Reg. 361/98, s. 4 (2); O. Reg. 86/99, s. 3."

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

If youre ever trying to find laws, ON has a site called E-Laws, where you can look up just about all of them.

It gets tricky because they only tell you what you CANT do, so if you cant find it, i guess you can assume its legal?

For example, there no law that says you MUST have a hood on your car to be road legal. Ive contemplated driving without one many times, but just dont wanna risk it.

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

It's all a big money grab... I'd be more worried about China's emmisions than those of cars from 1987 - 2004.

Neil did you do any after 1999?

I thought your red car had it done before that?

Maybe i misunderstood those previous posts youre talking about.

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

Looks like KAOS (cops) are cracking down a bit (Ottawa area). This article goes on to list some environmental infractions resulting in notices for modified equipment.

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

Anyone tried the old "I won't volunteer any information" method? I am not sure if they do visual inspection here in ON. Think they would notice a basically stock LS1 under the hood?

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

All hotrod tests were after 1999. The info I had and from my experience, hotrod = no visual, but still includes the gas cap test. They test to 1980 standards.

When the MTO first started doing safety checks, ohhhhhhh way back in the late 70's they yanked my plates from my '70 340 Duster 'cause the twin hood scoops had holes directly into the engine compartment. I contested it and got my plates back. Dorks!

As for no hood? Hmmm? Dunno. There's a Rat Rod running around here with no sides on the engine compartment.

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

Daz is right, if the car came equipped with a hood it must have it.

Re: ON e-Test & Hot Rods

I had to drive the car without a hood so I called the police department. It is legal to drive a car without a hood as long as there are nothing moving around in the compartment.
