How in the hell?
So here in lovely government sodomized, over monitored Ontario, we need to keep all that chugging nasty smog equipment. So my question becomes this, how in the hell are we supposed to make a nice peformance increase and abide within these constricting confines. There are even limits to the headers we can use due to the air tubes...
I want to keep my stock 305, at least for now. Though after reading up on what I need to find... The previous owner put on aftermarket headers, deleted the efe, half *** deleted the ac (which I was fine with) and removed the egr valve, the egr solenoid, stuck a non egr edelbrock on the quadrajet manifold and left the vacuum lines in such a disarray I have no idea what was going on until I removed most of them, and the smog pump is missing.
What can be done to pretty up the bay and squeeze a little performance out of the 305? (I know I know boat anchor, but it's what I want to do.)
And may the drive clean program leave horrid and classic cars alone. And my whoever thought it up burn in hell...
There I feel better
(just to clarify this would be my first rebuild and I wasn't expecting all this red tape)

Your t/a being a 85 doesn't even need to go through drive clean. I have seen plenty of guys with no emissions stuff on carbed motors. I even got pulled for MTO inspection on the side of the road with 90% of the original smog equipment gone and the only thing he noticed was a open crank case breather.
I wouldn't even bother hunting down the smog equipment.

It seems to depend on where you live and what kind of mood the inspector is in. Where I live, all emissions equipment must be intact, and at least appear to be functioning, even on pre-88 vehicles. I have a few friends that have had to deal with this.
I still find it baffling that with all of the information available that people still believe that emissions equipment actually hurts performance. They do not, and at times can help.
Luckily we don't have to worry about whether equipment has CARB certification, just that the equipment, or similarly functioning equipment is present and appears to be working. This means that as long as the AIR pump injects air into the exhaust it doesn't need to be at the same place as the factory, either before the cat or into the cat.
A friend of mine is completing a swap on his Girlfriend's Caprice and is using a newer electric air pump, to get away from using the belt driver type. This same friend owns a 1972 Cutlass that he's converted to EFI and I tune for him, retaining all emissions related equipment, or updated versions of such and produces over 500 HP and 600 ft/lbs in a car he drives thousands of miles each year, rather I should say abuses it for thousands of miles every year.
So to blame the emissions equipment for the engine not making good power numbers is just absurd to me.

Re: How in the hell?
Yeah...
I have calmed down a little now,
lol. I wrote that after finding out that a couple of plans I had for the car using parts that were already floating around were totally unrealistic for this car, and that I would have to go and find a bunch of parts that were now considered "obsolete" by the oem, which doesnt sound fun at all.
seriously though if anyone has some good ideas for smog friendly performance improvements that work within Ontario's hippy ideals, please let me know!

Re: How in the hell?
honestly im not even worried about it, i removed all my emission equipment on my 83, and i put a hollowed out cat on all that emission junk is gone, same motor as you, only i have bolt ons and a cam. now however ive also heard they were going to do California emissions here... now if that was the case i would definitely be paranoid but hopefully its scrapped before then, all it is is a money grab

I have been able to find ways to make anything work smog wise and still give great performance. Sometimes it takes looking at alternate parts, newer or from different manufacturers to work. Power adders and good tuning also work well in these situations.

Re: How in the hell?
My plan is to put in a more agressive cam and the springs to go with, I have an 85 so I should have flat top pistons already, and convert my engine to a l69 clone. I also plan on opening up my exhaust using a wide cat, and am planning on a true dual.
Anything else I can do to spruce the car up while still keeping it stock looking and smog legal? Would a chip be worth my time?
I need:
a new quadrajet (busy looking into the numbers for a non cc quad for the year)
headers and air tubes
air pump, brackets and pulley
air check valve
complete efe system.
egr valve and solenoid.
thats the short list so far, though the solenoid I cant seem to find one online

Re: How in the hell?
Firstly, SixShooter, excellent post re:emissions equipment. To the original poster and others, here is the deal. For the pre-87 and older vehicles, we need to appear visually correct; even if you have a 1973 Nova, you need cats, by law, if it came with them. Here is the government website: http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/environment...OD_098041.html
To that end, I am going to be parting a 1985 LG4 T/A that has the non-computer 305. I also have a few non-computer carbs for the 305 around. PM me if interested.

Re: How in the hell?
You know whats an effing joke? Up at my wifes family cottage in Sauble Beach (near Owen Sound) and points north, there is no emissions testing. Nothing at all. Went to a local cruise night and saw a 90 Camaro with a carbed 406. The engine was as bare as a 65 chevy underhood. Current plates.

Re: How in the hell?
This is why a P.O box might come into effect or a relitives address up north. Its complete crap they dont have it but we do. This program needs to be SCRAPPED COMPLETLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cash grab is over as no one has the cash anymore to keep up with the laws. What I would like to see is a website with certain motors and cars and list what they came with. I have a LQ4 in my car and all I know it came with is cats and smog pump. well its got one lol

""Even though his car is exempt from drive clean testing, the emissions equipment needs to be there and at least visually appear to be functioning.""
Sadly a few of my friends have gotten over a grand in fines thanx to these road side blitz's, because if they are in a bad mood, they can nail you PER infraction. Been pulled in myself in the past, lucky for me, I passed
Be forwarned, they even pulled out a thermal gun to see if my cats were hollow :/Its easy to go fast and keep with in the laws still, no need to panik

Re: How in the hell?
Even though vehicles with model year 1987 or older are exempt from regular Drive Clean testing, you are still required to meet the standards if a provincial officer directs you to take a Drive Clean test.
Taken from MOT Ont.
This means if they see visable infractions ie emissions, smoke etc. They need a reason to send you for testing.

Re: How in the hell?
They don't need a reason to send you anywhere. There are road side blitzs that pull in anybody they feel like. This is where you will get your fine. They give you no notice. No chance to put the stuff back on. I have seen them in large and small towns. I have seen newer carz pulled in and older pre 80's cars hauled in as well. I have seen cars have there plates removed for failing the roadside stops. Not to mention 380 dollars per infraction . One night I helped my brother-in-law tow over 20 cars for failing the roadside stop. some were for failing the safety aspect of the roadside but some were for emission infractions. So take this as a warning. I have seen it with my own eyes.

Re: How in the hell?
It's getting pretty bad. I've been pulled over for a road side inspection 4 times in the last 5 years. Only reason it isn't 5 for 5 is because I didn't drive my car for one of those years.
