1LE Brake Upgrade.... Who's doin it?
This upgrade seams to be quite popular with alot of our American counterparts. Has anyone from Canada recently looked into doing this? I know there are a few members on this board who have them. I would just like to know what the total cost is going to be. Not to mention the availability of parts.I haven't done much research, I was hoping that someone else from Canada has and knows approximately how much its going to be in Canuck Bux.
Thanx ,Steve

Good luck finding any parts. GM has now discontinued them.

check out liam92l98 he had it done to his 83 Z. We were talking about it last week at work and we came to the conclusion that the brackets could be made easily where we work (if we could get away with it)

I am seriously looking into it. I priced out some of the parts at the local dealer and they were a joke!! (i.e. $500.00 for the caliper and approx. $200.00 for the bracket!!). I'm probably going to order what I can from the States and take the hit on the dollar. I'll still be ahead. The left mounting bracket is the big question. It is out of production and no longer in stock. AndyZ28 is looking into an alternative source for the bracket for us (see Temporary 1LE Mounting Bracket Dicussion forum. Just a thought, with a lot of the cars these brakes were used on being from the Players Challange racing series up here, where are all the wrecked cars hiding....?
IROB,
Good question on the wrecked cars. I also took the three day race car school at Shannonville around 1990 that used IROCs with the 1LE brakes. What happened to those cars? Maybe someone can do some investigative work or they know someone at the track they can talk to.

Why would you go to the GM dealer for brand new calipers when you can go to Canadan Tire for remanufactured one for a fracture of the cost
Just ask for ie: 1990 vette reman caliper, you'll pay the core charge but it's still cheaper.
Now I have a question for people who want to do this mod.
How many of you would buy brand new 1LE GM spindles for this upgrade? I bought one, then when to the wreckers picked up 2 stock spindles. I then modified then like the 1LEs. The new GM spindle was not even tapped M12 for the capiper bracket, and at over $350 each (before 97)

Thanks, Bill. I originally checked Canadian Tire, but they only showed the front rebuild kits under the Camaro listing. I thought the Corvette caliper was slightly different, but if it works, all the better! I am planning to (attempt?) modify my own spindles.By the way, Steve Spohn has the missing parts ready for order. See the Temporary 1LE Caliper Bracket forum for more info.

Some of the expensive items I'm sure I could have had for a bit less at the dealer, my regular parts guy was on vacation and he usually gives me a pretty good discount. The master cylinder and prop valve I didn't necessarily need either, but I figured I might as well replace them while I'm at it.
I found the easiest way to get the parts whether its at the dealer or at a parts store is to tell them you have an 89 IROC with the 1LE or "performance package" brakes. In 1989 both the M1.0 and M1.5 brake lines were in use, so you can order the "first design" or "second design" parts to fit whatever your car has.
