The Ultimate Ride

OK. I just died and went to heaven and I have a reasonable amount of money to pour into an 87 V6 RS.

Ive come to you for advice!

How do I convert this modest ride into a heart stopping head turning daily driven beauty??

What does your ultimate ride look like? How is it equipped.

atleast one very fast RS...

I knew a guy in Vancouver, John Duda (he and his brother owns Mopac Performance) had a '91 RS that started life as a TBI 305. He converted it to a 355 with Dart heads, headers, dual plane, holley carb, MSD, etc. I think the cam was about 218/226 and .480/.495 ? Oh, yeah, 3.73s in the rear. Hey, when you own a performance parts store well... isn't that like being in a candy store as a kid ?!?!?

His RS was a low to mid 13 second car last I saw it, lowered with black GTA rims. REALLY looked sharp and regularily dusted off 5.0's and early 4th gen LT1s which was not an easy chore back then. Oh yeah -- it was a hardtop which I really like.

My favourite ? If I had the coin (and one day I just may) I'd get an '85 IROC HARDTOP and restore it. I would dump the 305/350 and install a hipo bal and blue-printed 302 Chev with a Weiand 7525 style intake (has EGR) and put a Holley 4 injector 1000cfm TBI unit on top. Get an Allison or Doug Nash 6-speed (oh that hurts the pocketbook $$$) with a 9 inch rear and brembo brakes all around. Lotsa minor stuff and suspension work as well.

I am not big on 1/4 mile but am high on auto-crossing. Hence the hi revving 302 (8500rpm). I would like to take a stab at getting a SOLID 1.0 lateral-g out of a 3rd gen f-body.

The more I think of it the more I am inclined to sell my current f-body and build this car. Hmmmm....

Well, thats my .02 cents worth.
RP.

I think I'd go with the 85 Iroc also but probably T tops I always liked the Idea of T tops. You get the feel of a convertable without sacrificing chasis strength and having to listen to the cloth flap when the roof is up.

I've had three t-topped 3rd gens and each time I swear NEVER AGAIN. I am on record -- my next will definitely be a HARDTOP !

The t-tops are great when they are off but the car otherwise it really needs SFCs to calm it down. On my '85 the windshield was actually seperating from the body due to twisting of the car. My '88 was a little better but still had trouble with sagging doors. My '91 is pretty good -- I am installing sub-frames before any trouble starts.

have a nice day.

Yes, when the top is up and it rattles and squeeks its irritating. WHen its 32C on a fabulous sunny day and the top is down and your cruising around there is nothing quite like it. I agree if you want a pavement pounder the hartop is the way to go. Converts and T's have a certain cruise appeal to them though. Just my .02
