Some call it fun

I would have sent the Firebird into the shop to re & re the leaking intake manifold gasket but I couldn't resist the urge to play garage mechanic one more time... and save about $800 in labour that could be used for upgrades.

Well the TPI is in a gazillion pieces and I am slowly re-connecting and re-attaching all the loose parts. Hopefully it will be back together for this weekend as I am REALLY looking forward to taking it for a ride. There is only so much Toyota Tercel (my winter beater) that a guy can take.

What have I learned on Richard's latest adventure ? :

- I used the dremel to clean off the old gasket material and the wirebrush bit came apart at 28,000rpm sending a thousand little barbs into my arms and legs. I got the last one out early this morning. I learned that one should wear a FREAKING cup when using a dremel to clean gasket surfaces... my aching nuts.

- the rad drain plug STILL will not screw in. I can't believe it but I am going to have to pull the FREAKING rad to fix this. Guess I should have drained through a rad hose instead. Learned that the FREAKING drain plugs were FARKED 15 years ago (on my '85) and guess what ? They still are on my '91.

- don't leave the bucket with the anti-feeze in it under the engine because all nuts, bolts, wrenches and sockets end up there when they slip outta your hand and fall clink, clank, clunk, splash -- into the green stuff.

- don't assume that just because the gas pressure has been dropped via the shraeder valve that gas won't come gushing out of the fuel lines as you dissassemble it. Gas, it turns out, behaves just like nuts, bolts, wrenches and sockets -- it ends up in the FREAKING green stuff in the bucket you WERE going to remove from underneath the engine (but forgot to).

- never assume you have enough band-aids on hand.

Tonight I will be re-installing the fuel rails. Assuming I don't blow myself up when I test the rails for pressure, it shouldn't take long to assemble the TPI and try starting her up.

I have one to add..........hose clamps are very sharp. The rad in my GTA did the very same thing last fall. I think it's caused by the little rubber gasket getting all wound up inside.

haha...When I disconnected the fuel lines at the front after the pressure had been relieved I couldn't believe how much fuel came out! ...I was totally unprepared for that so all the fuel dripped out on to the floor. I thought it was never gonna stop!

Hows this one... getting the fuel rail on, thinking it is all together... turn on the key and Niagara Falls, actually, more like a geiser of fuel in the engine bay Forgot to attacht he fuel lines... talk about over anxiuos... LOL
