Soon to purchase a 87 305 TPI, have questions

Ok im about to give the old heave-ho to the 2.8 bird and get some real power, an 87 305 IROC with only 87,000 miles. So far i looked over the car and it looks very clean, besides paint but thats cosmetic. I noticed he said the engine will only turn on only when the heat is turned on, also their is only one tail pipe exit instead of two, like a single dual outlet, he has the MAF connect to the TB with the dual k&n set up,also noticed the oil psi will rise and fall when gas is pressed, and volt meter will bounce a little up and down too when ideling. Now stuff that i mentioned above should i worry about and is their any think that the 87 IROC's are notorious for as far as breakdowns or any thing? The guy already has has 2 people check the car out so i wanna no asap if i shoud go ahead and get this before they ****** this, thanks. Also the car is going for $3,000

since nobody had replied, i'll give it a try..
what do you mean.. the engine will just turn on when the heat is turned on?.. like it won't turn over if the heater isn't blasting?
oil pressure falling and rising is pretty normal.. my car does that too.. and depending on the oil used, it'll do it pretty harshly or not too badly.. i'm guessing the thing dosn't have top quality oil in it because it's doing that.. fixed my problem when i went to a better quality brand.

but.. my volt meter dosn't budge a bit.. even with a 440w amp for speakers and a 700x2 amp (the subs are small and don't use up anything near what the amp gives out.. 2 10" that suck up 350 watts max per)
alternator might be shot.. or the regulator in the alt.. either way.. or the batterie....
anything else is pretty much the same as your 2.8 bird..
cept tuning.. i dunno but mine (althought it's a firebird) gets out of tune easily.. (or i play around too much with it). check for leaks around the valve covers..
other then that, i dunno..

just tryin' to help.

Yeah that heat thing is wierd, everything else I think Bird of prey's right about. Finding the single exhaust outlet on a 305 is fairly common, lotsa people did it when they replace the exhaust cause it was cheaper.

Man... sounds like you're getting a steal, it's got 87K miles and is an IROC, my '87 is a normal Z and has like 160K miles. The oil pressure and slight bouncing of the volts is normal as far as I know(at least in mine it is ) Be happy the oil pressure gauge even works, I'm pretty sure it's one of the things that is usually non functioning on our cars. There was a list someone posted of things that are normally found wrong on our cars. And MAF is a b!tch when it comes to making some sort of CAI for it, though some have been saying it's proven that the stock intake isn't very restrictive. Other than that, good hunting.

oh, just remembered.. since these cares are 10 plus years old.. the original sensors might be going.. so that could be something to think about if you buy it and somewhere along the road something gets flaky..
also vaccum lines..

I have an 87 vert w/305 TPI and I love it! If you're getting a manual 5 speed then you're in luck, if not you'll want to change the cam. The autos have a different cam that sucks. Mine has 140K on it and just started to leak oil from what looks like the rear main, the value guides could probably be replaced too, other than that it's pretty sound. I imagine you'll soon want more power, I guess you can stroke it to a 335, up the compression a point and get some significant extra ponies, I may do that at some point. $3K sounds like a reasonable price, enjoy!

3k? ouch..
now, i usully hate ppl who preach the 350, but..
if you're going to dump that much money into rebuilding/stroking a 305, just get a 350, you'll be much happier..
a 305 is a good motor.. as a daily driver with something at the low end (tpi)
a stroker 335 is not much of an option since you could dump 2 grand in a crate 350 or build up your own and get more hp out of it..
305 are fuel ecconomy motors (for older v8's) and they can't be pushed too much further N/A..

86- no big rush man, remember there's lots of cars out there. This thing with the heater sounds just a little fishy, don't you think? And 3K sounds like a little much for a car with symptoms AND cosmetic probs.
Hey Bird! I hear the weather is nice and hot today in MB must be nice (that's where I'm from).
Later,
Jeff
