Here's the drill. I'm looking at possibly installing the ZZ4 cam for my SD L98. I will retain the iron heads (ported & polished) and stock displacement for now. Eventually, i'll step up to the 383 and AFR heads.
My question is, will this cam offer significant benifits w/ the current set-up and is it a good match for the 383? If not, then what cam is the smartest choice for the immediate (350) and long run (383)?

If you're planning on going to a 383 and using the same cam I'd look at something a little bigger than the ZZ4 cam. Depends on your intake though. If you're upgrading the intake as well I'd step up to something like like the hot cam, or comp cams XR269HR wich has the same intake duration as the hot cam, a little less exhaust, and more lift on both. Or one step up to the XR276 HR which is 224/230 @ .05 and .503/.510 with 1.5 rockers (.537/.544 with 1.6). That one will definitly require some intake upgrades though. With the 350 you'd need a converter as well, in the 383 it would help but wouldn't be a must do to the added torque.

I was planning on the same thing but may go to the 383 right away. I have everything but the rolling stock. I also will be using corvette heads.(58cc) As far as intake I will run stock base with some porting , SLP runners , SLP cold air intake system and 25lb injectors. I was afraid the zz4 cam would not work but have been told it will be OK. Jegs sells a kit for 1149.00 for crank , pistons , bearings, rings, balancer and flex plate. Should give me 10.3 to 1 with my heads. Whats everybody think???????

Careful w/ a 383 and 58 CC chambers.
Also, Why all the bother to Just choke it off with a mildly ported Stock Base ?

rhurac30, the cam you are talking about (224-230, 5.03 5.10) i have the same cam, i also have the 1.6rr on the motor to.
Its an ok set up with this cam and my 383 BUT im going to change it, i will go with the tpis zz409 cam or the zzx, im leaning more to the zzx. Its a big cam. If you go with a cam that is good for your 350 and a 383, i would go with the zz409 cam. the zz4 is also a good one to. Its what ever is best the zz409 and zz4 are awsome i think you should pick out of the two. Also i think you should get a bigger base. That piece itself will peal ALOT of time off you next run, plus you dont want to leave your engine choking when you have a great cam and some good flowing heads, get a mini ram if you can afford it, if not get the tpis big mouth intake, with the big runners. If you are going to get a tb also, and you are willing to spend the money on one, get a 58mm, you wont lose anything atot, only gain. Spend the extra $20 or so for the 6mm more. good luck with you pick
