What is this??

What is this module on the firewall on the driver's side?

I just noticed that mine is cracked. It doesn't look like a fresh break and the crack is on the left side right behind the plenum so I never noticed it. Whatever it is it has been exposed to the elements for awhile and I'm wondering if it could be influencing the problems I'm having with my car.

Can someone help?
