my 86 tpi POS

My pos
man i got ripped off when i bought my iroc.., its a POS, the car idles rough alot, when i first start it, it sounds like a disel, and idles between 300-500 and it just sounds so horrible, till like 30 seconds later if goes to idling at 1500-2000.., is that too high to be idling in park, btw, i have a 305 TPI., when i pull to a light, it is fine for like 15 seconds, then it drops below 500 and sounds horrible again and sometimes dies.., does anyone know what could be the cause of this?, plus, the fans dont turn on, midas told me it was the engine temp. sensor?.., but after i bought the car last month it overheated and got a new fan, new fan relays and switches from goodyear, it worked alittleat the same time the harmonic balancer was replaced along with the back oil seal, but now it leaks a full 5 quarts + of oil a week., oh and theres more.., the gause gauge does not work, theres an electrical short i believe., when i turn my hazards on when i break down(its happened baout 5 times in the last 2 months and have to get towed).., the whole dash bounces up and down with the hazards blinking.., its very very odd.., i dont know if my oil gauge is faulty though.., what should my oil pressure be around?..im sure this would be affected though by the constant oil leak....

you dont even want to know what kind of gas mielage i get.., i go thru 3-4 full tanks a week and this isnt even driving alot, i dont race it.., what could be making me idle so bad?.., vacuum leaks?.., spark plugs..?

also, my fan ONLY works when i have the jey thing plugged into the comp.., to check the rror codes.., thats the only time it works..why's that?

Dude all is not lost...

I ran into the same deal with my ride. Sounds as if you need an idle air control valve and a temp sensor. Next I'd invest in some new spark plugs and a new cap and rotor... plus some new 8mm wires along with a new coil.

This should help your idle problems as it did for me.

These parts won't cost a great deal if money is an issue for you. Probably around $250 in the end which isn't bad and you can do all the work yourself as they are really easy to put on.

The oil leak sounds like the guys who did the work need to redo it again. I hate having mechanics do work on my car as stuff like that always happens. Do it yourself and know you did a good job.

Gas consumption sounds like a fuel pump and fuel filter issue. Again, these parts are not that difficult to install and are not that expensive. Pressure will build behind the filter and a HUGE amount of fuel will shoot into the block and burn more then is really needed. Which is why you go through a full tank every few days.

Not too sure about the electrical problem, as I'm not to knowledgable in that area, sorry.

Hope this helps you as every project car always starts out crappy. Just have patience and realize it takes a while to get it back into great condition. Don't give up :-)

Pick up a FACTORY Service manual for your car. They are very helpful with troubleshooting. If you want, I have an old beat up for your car laying around I would sell for not much.
