Smog Pump. WA State Emissions, Makes cat build up?

The Smog Pump on my '85 305 TPI started making a horrid noise. It didn't sound like your classic bearing going out noise. It was almost like an exhaustleak mixed with a lifter. Weird no? Well spend the $51 to get a remanufactured one.... or take it off? Will I pass DEQ? I've also read here that if you don't have the air equipment on, your cat builds up with crap from it? And truth to that?

I know you wont pass DEQ in Cali, but this is Washington...

I don't think it's true about the cat getting clogged up. If you get a 3 way replacement cat, you will be able to pass emissions without your smog pump.
