thanks

The knock sensor detects knock or pinging of the engine and then generates a low voltage AC voltage signal to an electronic module that is usually mounted on the firewall. That module converts the AC signal to a DC voltage and supplies that DC signal to the computer. The computer then retards the timing of the engine until the knock signal is no longer generated.
Knock typically occurs as a result of low octane or poor quality fuel. It can also occur if your engine has a lot of carbon or in poor mechanical condition or if the distriubutor timing is not properly set.
When the knock sensor signals the computer to retard the timing, you'll lose power as a result. It's designed to prevent mechanical engine damage to pistons, cylinder walls, rings, and valves should a severe knocking or pinging occur.
Even if the knock sensor system is functioning properly, you could notice a light pinging sound as a result of poor fuel quality. It's heavy knocking that the sensor is designed to prevent, so don't go replacing everything without proper testing just because there is a light pinging occuring.
Hope that helps.
