keep in mind that you'll only suck in hot air with a tb mounted air filter

cool air good:hail:

hot air bad

Yes, but more air is better than less even if it is warm, don't you think?

Warmer air is less dense than cool air. The more dense the air, the more air you get per unit volume. Therefore, the colder the air, the more air is available to blow gas up. Whether or not more air is better than dense air depends on the limiting factor of your intake. If the filter is maxed out in the cfm department at one temperature, the only possible way to make more power with air at the same temperature would be to use a filter with a higher cfm rating. However, because cold air is more dense (greater amount of air in a cubic foot) colder air is typically always better due to cfm restrictions on intake components.

I just took my car to the track comparing a homemade CAI with the RC-5000 cone filter on the end of the plenum.
CAI gave me on average 1/10 of a second and 1 mph.

To me the CAI would be good for the track and on the street I'd go with hooking the cone right to the plenum. I like the sound of the sucking

I understand how cold air is better. In my case,'89 305 tpi T/A, my stock airbox snorkle was only about an inch from the wall behind my headlights. I was able to turn it a bit toward an opening in the wall but that was all I could do. There wasn't even enough room to route some flexible tubing to the snorkle from a remote location without having to squeeze it between existing hoses & stuff. About a year ago I removed the airbox completely and was able to mount a larger exposed filter in its place. It still gets as little cold air as before but now can also take as much warm air as it wants. It just seems better than the restricted, cold air only arrangement.
