temp. gauge is reading all over the place and car is not quite running right..

I have a 86 iroc with a 305tpi, at. The car runs good but it seems like it is a little off when I step on it. Also, the temp. gauge is all over the place, and it just moves around when I hit the gas. I don't know what controls this or what causes this but maybe someone knows. Thanks, Mike.

Your coolant temperature gauge is controlled by a sensor on the driver side of your engine. It is in the cylinder head under your exhaust manifold. It should have a green wire running to it. Detach the green wire from the sensor and thoroughally clean the end of the sensor and the wire. Then reattach. If this does not help buy a new sensor at the store, they are only a few bucks. The temp changes pretty slowly, so if the gauge is jumping around there is problem there.

This shouldn't have any adverse affects on engine performance.

i would say it is just coincidence *sp* that both happend like this at the same time...but do what 383 rocket bird told you to fix the temp guage...and if what he says doesn't work you might looke for some sort or short or a failing guage.

as far as the car not running right, i have heard of the knock sensor being the cause of this and you might want to see if your engine is knocking *should be pretty apparent, but sometimes it can elude the ear* or look into replacing that sensor....might want to do a search ont he boards for knock sensor, because i know there are some posts on it describing the symptoms and then you can match it up with yours better. g luck and hope things work out

thanks for all the help guys..i fixed the temp. gauge so now it is reading correctly. as for the car running, it is still a little rough but i think it will be ok...i used a scantool and it came up with the codes 22, 23, 33. One is the throttle position sensor, one is the maf, and one the mat i think. Where are these located?

TPS...is on the pass side of the throttle body, it has 3 wires running to it, directly across from the thottle cable hookup.

The MAF is the sensor located on your air ducting...should have a 5 wire connector running to it

MAT is one the underside of the plenum and has a 2 wire connector running to it
