Emissions Testing in Ohio

Looks like I will be making the move from Chicago to Northern Ohio. Right now I have a 2 year exemption on my emission testing. I'm a little concerned because I have just installed a large solid roller cam. Does anyone know if it's possible to get exemptions in Ohio?

Depending on which county you move to will determine if you will have to get your car E-checked. All Ohio requires is that the cat be intact, fuel system (gas cap) seals properly and that your emissions are within limits for that year. Ohio does tailpipe emissions on a dyno roller, they did change speeds, if I remember correctly they dropped it to 35 ish from highway speeds.

Heres the addy for E-check...

http://www.epa.state.oh.us/dapc/mobile.html

And the counties effected....Ohio's non-attainment areas that were ranked moderate and were required to comply with vehicle emissions testing as of 1990 include:

Cincinnati: Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren counties;

Dayton-Springfield: Clark, Green, and Montgomery counties; and

Cleveland-Akron: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties

BTW, the test is pure bullchite since it only requires individuals from the listed counties to be tested and amounts to an unfair tax to those that live there. cheers, Bob

Saturn5 - You answered my question. Thank you. I will be moving to Lorain County. I have an off road y pipe as well as a y pipe with dual cats. Last time at the emissions in ILL, the car passed with flying colors thanks in part to my DFI.

If you passed in Ill, I see no reason you won't pass in Ohio providing you swap the dual cat pipe in during the test. The test here is pretty dumbed down. Usually spend more time in line than the test takes. I was able to pass my old GT with precats only, the lower cats were just cans. The only problem I had was at that time they ran the car to 60 on the rollers, then braked down the rollers..Friggin morons would toast the rears on my Mustang every time. Course since stock brakes are 9 inch drums..not all that hard to do..LOL, cheers, Bob

I just passed the emissions on my ta, with the stealth ram and XE262 cam installed. This is on a chip with no work to the fuel rails, only tweaking the fuel pressure constant. It's amazing how much a new cat helps out. In ohio I've never heard of them popping the hood, they just look underneath for a cat and check the gas cap pressure, and then run it on the roller.

If you're serious about getting an exemption, there are a few ways you can go about it. You can try to get collector plates, but that limites the mileage you can put on it. You can get a waiver if you have reciepts for $300 of parts or repairs done within 60 (i think) days before the test. There are also exemptions if youre unable to get the car tested for medical reasons or if youre out of the state for an extended period.

All i all it's easier to just make the car pass. Since they dont test for NOx you can just setup the car to run a little lean and that will usually get you to pass. Lots of people reccomend running part alcohol, but that just effectively leans out the mixture because it is less HC dense. Change the oil before the test, and get the cat good and hot before the test.

Yea, and watch out for the bastards in the testing station, they love to beat on cars on the rollers. Try to go to a testing station out in the more rural areas, not the ones in the city.

My favorite was a few years ago, in Warren County, the so-called techs went to test a 4X4 Chevy. They go about there usual routine, and pull the truck on the rollers. The tech hits the gas..and whooops its a full time 4 wheel truck, the fronts engage and pull the truck off the rollers, crush the big fan in front and it crashes into the holding area where you stand to watch these mental migets test your car...cheers, Bob
