Need opinions on Mods...
I am relatively new to Iroc's, this one is my second. I have questions on the set-up of this car...please keep in mind I bought it with these mods already done.
1988 IROC convertible
400 sbc w/stock TPI
Comp Cam .050 222/226
350 202 World heads
stock 19# injectors @ 40 psi
Edelbrock headers
Rebuilt 700r4 with corvette servos
My question is the power seems like it should be more. I ran it at the track 1/8 mile 9.9sec @ 69mph. Seems to me it should be faster. I have more specifics on the engine and such if more is needed. Does this setup look to be incorrect in any way. I'm not up to speed yet on internal mods and what affects what.
Any ideas or opinions.
Thanks
oh yea, I picked her up for $3k.

Well seeing as how my pretty much stock 305 TPI runs a 9.7 1/8 mile, i'd say something is majorly wrong with your setup..

1. You're running a stock TPI setup on a 400.
2. You're running 305 injectors!!! 19# injectors? And only 40 PSI
3. Prom. If you're running 19# injectors, then your car was originally a 305 right? If you're running a 305 chip, then your stuff is all out of whack. If you're running a 350 chip, then ur stuff isn't as bad, but you still need some prom tunning.
If you got an aftermarket intake manifold (or siamesed yours), SLP runners, port your plenum, AFPR and get a custom prom, then your car should run like a champ. Also, what rear gear are you running?
By the way....great looking car!
Thanks
Yes it was a 305, good call on the 19#ers. The rear is different too with taller gears but still haven't gotten under there and pulled any numbers to research, but I'll do that soon. The prom is a 350 prom and I guessed that might be part of the problem (prom tuning) the car came with a Jet chip burned for this set-up but besides a little longer before gear shifting I don't see a big difference, it came with the receipt and cost $500 so I thought I'd try it, but oh well. I just put the 350 one back in this afternoon while waiting for responses to this post. So injectors and more air huh?
I'm really not smart when it comes to setting up this stuff but I'm learning quickly on this site. Already picked up a cheap laptop to begin scanning. Where can I get the software for that?
Any other ideas are very welcome.
Thanks

Yea, i'd take care of the injectors first....get something like some Accell 24#ers for $229. Bump the fuel pressure to about 48-50 psi at WOT (assuming you have a AFPR...if you dont, get one), and take care of the TPI setup. See how it runs w/ the 350 chip, but it'll still more than likely need prom tuning. But get that fuel taken care of cause you're probalby running LEAN AS A MURF...which is NOT good.
Thanks again
Yes 89Irocz23,
I'm in P'cola, Is there ever any 3rd Gen events over your way? I haven't seen too many Irocs around here. Once I get this thing running better I'd be up for cruising that way if there are any get togethers. Let me know.
Thanks ir0cz,
I'll be looking for injectors this week. I think I have an AFPR but not sure. If you don't mind I'm going to post a pic of it and see if you or anyone else can tell by looking at it. And I guess the next step will be the intake manifold? Is that what you would suggest? Any paticular kind. Without spending a fortune. I want good parts but don't have to have the best on the market.
Thanks again and let me know what you think.

Yea, first thing is the fuel injectors, fuel pressure, and put the 350 chip back in. I dunno if I'd go get a manifold just yet. Keep in mind that doing just one induction piece wont do much, you gotta do the whole package. If you get an aftermarket base, then the stock runners wont match up, you'll have to get some runners (I perfer SLP) and port match them w/ the base. Then the plenum wont match up to the runners, so you'll have to port it..blah blah. So best thing to do, so that you're not constantly pulling the TPI setup apart is just wait till you can get enough money to get the manifold and runners then put them on. They will more than likely have to have a little porting to match them up...are you able to do that? If you're really good at porting, you could siamese your stock intake to match your runners rather than paying $400 for an aftermarket one. It's realy more complicated than just bolting a bunch or parts together. Lemme know if you can do any porting, or know someone that can, then I can tell you what route you should take.
Porting..
I think I can port whatever needs to be done, as long as I have or can make a "stencile" to have something to go by. I think I saw a post on porting or siamising the intake on here or another website. Let me know if you know where the directions with some pics might be for porting it. Thanks for the help. And yes I put the 350 stock prom back in and I think it actually runs better.
Hopefully will be running better as soon as I can get the injectors and the porting done.
Let me know anything else I should be planning on.
