fuel pressure jumping around when driving

very strange problem, it is not constant. when i was driving back to school i noticed the pressure jumping all over the place. from 42 while on the highway and would i would excelerate it would go as low as 22, then if i eased off the gas it would rise back to 42 or sometimes higher. the car also will not idle, no matter what, it will just die. anyone? i am at school and dont really have alot of time to spend guessing on things but a general idea of what could be causing this woul be great.

Does it ever go HIGHER ?
like extreme pressure?

If not i'd say maybe your fuel pump is giving up the ghost

if so maybe your diaphram in your fuel pressure regulator is misseated or torn.

Fuel pressure changes while moving the throttle is normal, after all the regulator is vacuum operated and the vacuum in the engine changes as the throttle is opened or closed.
Not idling....what is the pressure when you "attempt" to idle?

Nope, mine does that, has all the time, depending on the weather conditions at the time. As barometric pressure changes, so will your fuel pressure readings at any given vacuum.
