E-Tec 1/4 times(finally)

Well, I finally got my Monte up to the almighty Wisconsin International Raceway today. To sum up the few runs I had, the only word that comes to mind is wow. Todays runs were done on my BFG radial TA tires, with a high humidity(sweat pouring, and I mean pouring in my eyes) 90* day. I went into today hoping for a solid 13.5 run on total street meats. To my surprise, my first run netted me a 12.907 @ 106.294. Holy crap I say, I almost pissed myself. I figured that may be about it, because it felt like a solid run, and that was way better than I expected. Run 2, it seemed to feel a little better, 12.729 @ 107.061. Good lord! NO WAY run 3 can top that. Run 3, 12.593 @ 107.758 I am in disbelief. Run 4, 12.522 @ 107.773. All I got was 4 runs(sucks), but I have hit a major wall in power. I go through the traps at 6200 RPMs, and the motor has totally flattened out by then. I gained over 4 tenths throughout the runs, and just a shade over 1 mph,and that doesnt compute. From those of you that checked out my dyno posts, remember I discovered on the dyno that the motor pukes over 5700? That is totally not noticable until you hit the 1/4 mile. While I dont really (think) that the stiffer valve springs I need are going to help my ET very much, I think there is no doubt a few MPH left in this thing. I'll keep you all updated, but all I have to say is that I am very happy with my first time out with the car. I plan to run later this month when it cools off and I have my valve springs changed. Wish me luck :lala:

Supercool times first time out! That cam is huge! Anyway I just bought me a set of E-tec 170s. I am curious as to what intake gaskets and bolts you used.

Let me know.

Holy old post Batman!! As you may have seen in my sig, my best run last year was the 12.44 @ 109.6 on my BFG Radial T/A's full street tires. I just got the motor back from the builder who did the valve spring change, and a couple other odds and ends, so next year should be interesting. My ultimate goal is for an 11 second street tire pass!! On this motor we used the GM intake gaskets, and regular bolts that fit. Some things have been said about needing the GM bolts, but I put a few hard miles on this thing and never had a problem. HTH, and any other questions feel free to ask.

Holy old post is right, but you are the only guy doing the E-tec thing. Except for me now. Anyway, are they the GM plastic ones that fit the vortec bolt pattern only? Or the new ones that fit both the vortec and old style bolt pattern?

I will be running my 170s on a 383 with 10.8:1 under a Superram intake and SDPC base with the Comp XR276HR-12

They are the plastic GM Vortec only ones. Everything I have ever heard so far was never to crossbreed any Vortec style head with any non Vortec gaskets or intakes.... I have not done it myself at all, but have heard it isnt such a good idea.

My manager at work has an 85' Trans Am w/ a 5.7" rod 383 & E-Tec 170cc heads. He has an RPM air gap, 1.5 roller rockers, Lunati 235/240 duration .490" lift cam - hyd. flat tappet. His compression isn't very high... I'd guess 9.5:1 at best. It has Headman elite shorty headers & y-pipe, no cat, 2.5" dyno max cat back, 3.42 posi, 600cfm holley carb #1850. He ran several 13.20's @ 107+ on street radials w/ a 700R4 that would hardly shift out of 2nd gear under full throttle. Shortly after that trip to the track the 700R4 took a dump and the car is sitting.

Congrats, nice runs! At the rate you were progressing, you'd have been in the 11's if you'd gotten in a few more runs.

About those gaskets, I am going to use the newer style that are regular type gasket material and not the plastic ones. I went to the dealer and compared them both on the heads and intake. The plastic ones are big boxes and dont fit the ports very well, alot of material around would need to be removed to gasket match, to much and it may hurt velocity. My E-tec 170 heads already come CNC matched to the new gaskets Felpro 1255 right out of the box, BONUS! The newer gaskets were made for the GM Fastburn heads, they have bolt holes for both new and old style manifolds witch the fastburns are already drilled for. The gasket openings match the tall tapered intake port of the Vortec, Fastburn, and E-tec heads. Although GM has designed the fastburns for both vortec and oldstyle manifolds I agree that running the old style is not the best idea on the tall runner ports as they cant line up very well. Anyway vortec style head owners have 3 choices for gaskets the gm plastic ones, the new gm standard material, and the felpro 1255 which is the same as the GM standard material.

Thanks for the input guys. Lets keep these E-tec threads updated as it sounds like there are some strong combos out there.

Ominous - Did you already buy the heads? If not, I can get a pretty good deal on Vortec heads that flow pretty close to what mine flow.

Ya dude, I got the heads! They are pretty sweet heads! The combustion chambers and the exhaust ports are just killer out of the box. The intake port had some casting flash but nothing major at all, I have already worked one over pretty well with barely any time into it, sanding rolls only. Out of the box they come CNC ported to a Felpro 1255 on the intake side and a Felpro 1404 on the exhaust side and all the bowls were hand blended. Aluminum heads with all the good parts for 899$ at Summit, that was with the 10% off for the holidays, I couldnt pass em up.

Mark

BTW. Thanks for the offer on the heads. Ill get some pics of these heads up here soon after I finish working over the first one.

TPI79MC, what's your 60' on that 12.44 run? What does your suspension look like? That is amazing hook for those radial TA's. I'm just looking for ideas on getting my car to find any kind of traction, even with drag radials.

Good job Jeremy. I've been a fan of your car for a while. You've got some very nice potential in that car Wish I could follow in your steps and go etec200s w/ a Mini-Ram III, but 2much$....
