What's that hum in the rear?

Just curious if this is normal, as I'm pretty new to the TPI group. I got a 86 IROC, 305 TPI, auto. It primes fine, starts fine, accellerates fine, no misfires or anything. My question. At idle, stopped at a light, etc, I hear this humming noise from the rear. Give it alittle gas, it goes away. As I accellerate, sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't.

Should I anticipate replacing the fuel pump soon, or is mine working normal?

Only thing back there is the fuel pump. The pump on my high mileage '85 made more and more noise - especially after I ran it out of gas - but I totalled the car before I could replace it.

So should I anticipate replacing it soon? The car only has 83k miles.

If it is getting progressively worse, you should probably replace it. If not, it could last a long time.

The pump in my IROC makes a lot of noise. It could be an after market pump in there already. Those tend to be a little louder anyway. If its the original, I would just make sure it doesn't get worse and try to keep a half a tank of gas in it at all times. That'll help the pump stay cool and hopefully get you past the 100k mile mark. Then I would seriously look into replacing it w/ a 255.
