Do I NEED the oil pressure SWITCH

Posted this in Tech/General too

Ok with the LT1 intake mine doesnt seem to have a lot of room in the back of the intake, and mine is the style that has the sender and the switch both back by the distributor.

I have the sender in, is the pressure switch necessary. I mean I know it would be nice to kill the engine if I loose pressure, but if I cant get it in there, will the car run, will it throw a code, blah blah blah

My 87 TPI car has two Oil PSI switches. The big canister one on the back of the intake if for the gauge inside the car, nothing more. The one above the oil filter is the kill switch for the fuel pump. You shouldn't have any problems unhooking/doing away with the one on the intake. If you don't mind not having an Oil PSI gauge.

It's not a kill switch and doesn't kill the engine if you lose oil pressure. If you want to prove that statement just unplug it while the engine's running and watch what happens (or doesn't happen).

86s should have a seperate sender ((one wire connector by the distributor) and oil pressure switch (two wire connector by the oil filter). Later cars should have both in one (3 wire connector) by the oil filter.

So, no, you don't NEED it. But if I were you, I'd get the integrated piece out of a later car and install it by the oil filter. Get the connector from the boneyard and some wire to extend the lead. This way, you get your room up top, and keep all the functionality that the factory intended you to have.
