Help! Injector/regulator swap
Help! Injector/regulator swap
I took my Monte for an inspection and it failed. After some testing it looks like a couple of stuck injectors. I put a gauge on it and I lose all fuel pressure in about a minute, even after I close off the feed & return lines. I decided to change all the injectors and the regulator(puttin in an adjustable) since I'm there anyway.
Here is my question, when I pulled the plenum off I found a puddle of fuel sitting inside of it. Is this from the stuck injectors or should I be checking for something else? I also looked like the runners were wet and the lower gaskets on the runners were fuel soaked. Please help I'm plannin on putting everthing back together tonight and getting it inspected asap(expired tag) AND I want to take it to Etown on Saturday(no racing yet, just a shakedown drive) Thanks in advance.

With the fuel rail still connected to the fuel lines, raise the assembly up just enough to where the injector nozzles clear the bores in the intake. Turn the ingnition key to "on" but don't start the car. The fuel pump will prime, and you will see exactly where the leaks are.
When you do find the culprit(s), look for loose injector clips at the top of each injector, bad o-rings (replace them ALL anyway), check the fuel presure regulator for leaking around the mounting screws, and also make sure that the injectors don't go too far into the bores in the intake. If they do, use a medium thickness washer under each mounting post on the rail to raise it up a bit out of the injector bores.
With fuel puddling on the intake, I would suspect a badly leaking injector or a leaking FPR. Trust me, I've had both probelms and they both puddle fuel very quickly!
When you've found & fixed the problem, don't forget to leak test the fuel rail assembly once again before you bolt it down...

Thanks guys,
I did the leak test and found two leaking injectors AND a bad regulator. I got the fuel system back together last night and tested it as you said. No leaks and it's holding pressure. It drops @ 4-5 lbs after I shut off the pump and then holds indefinetly.
Thank you again.

My IROC does the same thing. Injectors aren't leaking, so I know it's not that. And if the FPR was leaking, it wouldn't hold at a certain pressure.
My fuel pressure jumps to 42psi ( or whatever the AFPR is set for ) when the pump is primed, but cut the key off, and the pressure IMMEDIATELY drops about 4-10psi, then hold STEADY.
I've checked 3 other TPI cars so far. (1) did the same as mine, and it's BONE STOCK, no mods whatsoever, and the other (2) didn't drop enough pressure to notice.
Just wondering out loud...

Looks like you found the problem. Congrats.
Mine holds pressure without dropping for at least ten minutes. I have an electrical gauge so I didn't feel it necessary to test any longer than that. Anyway, periodically when I drive my pressure drops to 35 and goes up from there with the gas. Most of the time I'm driving the pressure's at 39 while cruising. I've never gotten it above 43.
I find it strange that sometimes it cruises at 35 psi and others at 39 psi.

oh well.
