Easiest way to drain coolant from block/heads?

I'm fixing an intake leak and did not drain the coolant ahead of time.
Everything is off except for the manifold but it's full of coolant. I'm afraid it will spill into the motor once I remove the manifold, is that true? (sorry dumb question)
If so how can I get around this? Thanks.

Pulling the lower rad hose should take care of it.

I tried that but it only drained from the radiator itself.

The block does have drain plugs. About halfway between the front and back, just above the pan rail you'll see some bolts sticking out. Actually, the knock sensor will be in one of them.

Thanks Ed. I didn't jack the car up though so I don't think I can get to them. I forgot about the fan switch in the block on the passenger side since it's accessible from above.

If you pulled the lower rad hose it is just a good thermo holding you up. Just loosen the heater hose fitting that is on the engine side of the thermo and your water should nicely dump out. That is unless I am reading another page from what you are saying.

I've removed the intake about 30 times in 2 years and the best
method I've found (4th-gen crowd figured it out) is to:
1) carefully remove top rad hose from rad and catch
small amount of dribble
2) wet-vac down the rad hose and you can get a pint thru the stat
3) remove the rad hose & stat and continue the wet-vac'ing until you have 1 gallon.
(takes about 30 seconds.. 8-)

It's amazing how well it works after dumping coolant
down into my motor so many times..
