Help- Code 24

Need a little help, again... I'm getting a code 24(vss) only when I'm at a dead stop. When I check my books they all say to ignore it if it comes on when at a stop. But it is affecting my idle speed. The light comes on and the idle wants to stay @ 1200 - 1400 rpm. Once the light goes out, the idle drops to normal. I don't just wanna change the VSS w/o doing any checks. Thanks for any help

Dunno how the Montes are, should be close, but:

When I had a problem that sounds identical to what you're experiencing, it turned out to be my dash cluster housing. It houses all the gauges and has a printed circuit on the back that has the leads that sort of drop off into two cavities. When the housing is mounted in the dash, the two connectors in the dash plug into those cavities making the connection between the car and the gauges. My 89 has a cable driven speedometer and the VSS pickup is mounted on the housing, so the signal goes through these connectors. Well they had a film of oxidation on them (copper oxidizes green) which I cleaned off with a pencil eraser. I haven't had a problem since. That was about a year and a half ago. Go easy on the copper elements since it's easy to lift them off the plastic and potentially break them (they're only about a .010 inch thick).
