ECM questions
I just found out I can use a 730 ecm from other cars not just 90-92 camaros for converting to speed density. If possible could anyone elaberate on this. which cars to look for? with what engine size? which prom chip? does it use the same as these other cars or do I need one for the camaro? how can these other cars use the same ECM? I really need more information, so any of you guys can help it would much appreciated. thanx
Look for a late 80s to early 90s Lumina/Corsica or Berretta. Also Pontiac Tempests and virtually all FWD V6 MPFI car from the late 80s to the early 90s. Just avoid "W"s.
The Lumina does not have a VATS module as standard equipment. They probably have the "VATS" disabled in the V6 eprom.
To get VATS, you need the the VATS module, the ignition and the key. You'll only find that in a Corvette or an F-body of that era.
Lastly, the 4th digit of the VIN is the car model (avoid "W"s) and the 8th digit is the engine code.
You will need the prom chip and memcal for a Camaro.

what is the module needed for the transmission? is it a factory piece that I need or do I have to go to an aftermarket company?
sorry for all the questions, I bought a book TPI swappers guide and it doesnt talk about any of these things.

You can use the distributor from the 88 with it's module (the red thing with pin connectors on the side of the distributor). Go to the link below (GM ECM's) and select the 1227165 ECM. Follow the links at bottom of page. Print the pages. This is the harness you have. Go back to main page. Go to 1227730/1227727 page. The 1227727 was an underhood speed density ECM for 89 Grand Prix Turbo and 90 Vette. You will also see all the model vehicles the 730 ECM's were in. Some were TBI most were MPFI (TPI). Print the pages for the 90-91 "F" body. You will have to get connectors for the 730 or 727 and modify your harness to work. There are pages here in Tech help to make it easier. A sending unit will have to be mounted between your speedo cable and transmission gear for speed sensing. That part number I believe is in Tech help. It is aftermarket. GM ECM's Email John at weg1192@aol.com. He made my harness. Maybe he will send you drawings and part numbers. Also, I'm not sure if you will need a different driven gear on the distributor shaft for the 82 model..
