Question about setting minimum air or idle
The procedure by Tom Keliher(sp?) for this in the tech section says to ground terminals a and b in the aldl with the paper clip, then do a bunch of stuff. It never says when to take out the paper clip. I thought I read you should never start the motor with the clip in there grounding the a and b terminals. ???
Well I put in the clip, turned on the key, removed the IAC connector, then it say start motor. Well I removed the clip there and then started the motor, it still idles at 1000 rpm with the adjusting screw all the way out. AM I suppoesed to start the motor with the clip in there, then adjust? When does the clip come out? it never says in the procedure.????????????
Thanks, my car is apart in the garage waiting for an answer.

I tried this and the car idles at 650rpm, in gear with the iac disconnected and the adjusting screw backed all the way out. It then idles at about 850 rpm in park. I guess I will pull the Iac out and clean it as suggested in this article as well and see if that helps, but I just had it out when I changed the TB to the 52mm and cleaned it then

The only way I know of to properly set minimum air on a TPI car is with a scanner. With the car fully warmed up in closed loop look at the idle motor position. You're shooting for 20. If higher, you don't have enough minimum air and the stop screw for the throttle body blades must be turned in to open the blades more at idle. Now, if you do this with the engine running the idle speed will not change, that is until you shut off the engine and restart it. The idle motor position should now be closer to 20. If the number was originally below 20 then you need to back off on the screw. As long as you restart the car after each adjustment there will be a change in the idle motor position. The car runs 100 times better once this is properly adjusted. I couldn't believe the difference. Have fun!
