stall converter with ZZ4 cam

Will my stock converter be OK with a ZZ4 cam? 1991 RS with B4C/350.

Depends on your definition of OK. IMHO, stock converters aren't much fun even with a stock cam. I know, thats not what you were asking, lol.
Seriously though, the ZZ4 cam is mild mild mild. Low end is actually even a little better than stock just due to the lobes having a real shape to them. So no, you don't 'need' a converter to get solid results from it.

Thanks, Ed. I'm just trying to add a little bit of power until I can afford to drop in a crate motor. Right now it's just my daily driver.

i thought the ZZ4 cam was a pretty decent cam... not really radical but a solid cam.. i dont think the ZZ4 is that mild.. maybe for like a 383, but i think for a 305 a ZZ4 cam will be a nice soild cam.. im gunna go with a 2400stall with 3.23's or 3.42's in the rear

It also depends on your rear gears and whether you have a lockup converter. You don't want the converter slipping when you're at cruising speed. FYI, I have a 2400 behind the ZZ4 in my Chevelle with 4.11's and it seems pretty happy.

You can have a stock convertor re-stalled to 2800. I had a 3000 in my L03 car and it ran good. It was worth .5 and 2 mph. I have the same convertor in my ZZ4 cammed 355 and I'll let you know how it works if I can ever get it started. If you're in the market for a convertor let me know. I'm a dealer for some bad *** convertors.

So if you want to use this site to push your wares, why not buy an ad?

Sorry, not trying to be an ***, but with costs to run this site ever increasing we can't let everyone with his own business just use this site as a free way to drum up customers. This site has always been a lot less strict than a lot of other major car sites in that respect, but unfortunately too many people have been taking advantage of that and it seems to rapidly be getting worse.

I think the original question was will the ZZ4 cam work fine without adding a higher stall converter...as already answered...YES.

And as already pointed out, the stock stall SUCKS... If you have to keep the slushomatic ( Can you tell I'm MORE than ready to swap my WC T5 in? ) keep the converter a lock up style, and keep the stall under 3200 RPM or so for the street, depending on your gears.

And with converters, you get what you pay for...

Friend of mine builds tranny's for a living. He's tried everyone under the sun...now after using a Vigilante, he said he won't use anything else...

The one he used now is rated at 2800 RPM, but behind a healthy 400 small block it flashes to 3200 or so....

Hell, the things even come with a warning sticker about driving in the rain with their converter

I tried to get ahold of Brad and Dirk about getting an ad, but they didn't reply. And I don't feel like I'm really trying to 'push my wares', but when someone mentions they need something, I mention that I can help them out and it's usually in the form of a PM or email.

I like the Vig convertors. Just about the only ones that we haven't had a problem with. Most of the Yanks we see come into the shop are toast, and the B&Ms and TCI's are junk too.
