Timing for my 87 GTA

Hi,

My Emission Control label under the hood has been missing for years and now I need to adjust my timing. Can someone please give me the following infomation how to set my timing for a 1987, 5.7, TPI GTA.

Of course disconnect the tan wire w/black strip connector

1. Base Timing B4TDC in Deg?
2. Idle speed while setting timing?

Thanks,

Timing

Excuss me for asking for help using this forum. I had now idea Timing questions were banned. I have looked everywhere in my service manuals and they all say to refer to the Emission Control Label in the engine compartment. I have read several threads in the TPI section and there are no straight forward answers concerning the correct RPM to use while checking. I asked for help because my label is simply missing and I had hoped someone wouldn't mind looking at theres and then relay the information back to me. Sorry for wasting your time reading my question, you might have seen it sevaral times but I recently found about Thirdgen.org and think it's a wonderful source for information. Everyone has to start somewhere and I'm trying to learn.

Vance,

My reply wasn't meant to offend you. I pointed you in that direction, as the "timing" question gets asked (apparently) quite often around here. The point of the sticky I referred you to is to answer the more common questions, not to offend the newbies. I believe this might help as well.

1. 6°
2. Set minimum air after setting timing. Set timing and minimum air with transmission in Drive (Auto) or Neutral (Manual)

Timing

Jza,

Thank you for your reply, can you please clear-up a small detail for me. Should timing be checked with the transmission (auto) in drive? I have read several threads about this topic and many people say this can be done in park. I think the factory emission label under the hood gave the following info. Degrees, RPM and Drive or Neutral, but mine is missing. Can you please confirm these settings?

Thanks,

Factory label says
6° (DR)
Just a warning, remember that when you twist the distributor your idle speed will rise or fall accordingly. Since you're setting in drive, make sure your wheels are properly chocked and the ol' parking brake is set.
