Problems with 305 TPI

I'm having some problems with my 86 Camaro TPI305.

It seems to idel seak on start up and then idles real high, about 1500 RPMS. Sometime it will go down to 650 sometimes not.

Also the service light will come on after I start to drive the car. I cna let it idle all day and it will not come on but 50 feet down the road it will come on. The light will stay on if I stop the car and let it idle, But if start to cruise on the free way it will go off for a few min then come back on for a few then go back off ETC.

It also seems to be over heating some runs about 220* I checked timing, TPS, the idle air sensor (can't remember name) replaced O2 sensor and 2 sensors just underneath the intake on the passenger side (coolant temp sensor, and something else) I also changed the MAT temp sensor and knock sensor. Only sensor I haven't change yet is just under the exaust manifold on the drivers side.

Also it seems that the car is running a little rich and has almost no low end power.

I haven't checked lately, about a week, but I was getting O2 sensor rich, MAT temp HI, and that was all. oh also forgot I changed all the plugs wires coil cap and rotor to try and fix it, didn't help.

I have had considerable experience with the problem you are having right now. I had it for MONTHS. I did everything to get rid of it. I will go over the most minor to the severe. I can almost guarantee it's one of these things

You might have a vacum leak. Check all your hoses and replace
any that look damaged or worn. Next check your O2 sensor. If that doesn't do it then check your Ignition coil, cap rotor and all that junk. I had a burnt plug wire. (only part of the problem) The next logical step is to check and replace if necessary, your TPS sensor.

Check your IAC valve. Lube it and or replace it if necessary. It's not that expensive. Make sure to clean your throttle body and clean your TB blades and passage. IAC issues are the most common cause of this problem from what I understand.

Once you have gone over all that then you need to move up in your trouble shooting efforts. Begin with the MAF sensor. Barrow one and check it or buy one and return it if that's not it. Finally we arrive at the root of the problems I was having. My ECU went bad.

Search the board for exact proceedures on the TPS and the IAC cleaning solution. There is a very detailed article on this site about it. (That's how I learned how.)

I don't know if I have missed anything but it's fair to say that I had alot of trouble with this. On my car not one of these solutions did the trick. I had to go through replacing almost every part listed above. I replaced my Coil, plugs, cap, rotor, TPS, IAC stepper motor, MAF and ECU.

I hope your problem clears up easier than mine did. Hope this helps.

One good thing is that the ECU wasn't that expensive. It was tough to find in my area though. There is however a specialty place near my area that remanufactures them. The MAF however is always expensive unless you can find a part at the bone yard.

In my opinion, it sounds like a vacuum leak. I had the same codes and symptoms, it would barely idle sometimes and the exhaust was making my eyes burn it was so rich. Then I found a vacuum leak. As soon as I fixed it my car was just like normal again. I didn't change any sensors either, the large sucking sound gave away the vacuum leak so I knew I didn't need to change a sensor.

Sorry for rambling.

later,
Jesse
