mass air question

Hey guys, i was wondering what the deal is with the mass air on these cars compared to the mustangs. with the stangs can throw a nice cam in and some heads and not worry about it. with these cars u have to run smaller cams so u don;t upset it and what not. i am just kinda wondering why the stangs seem to be so much more forgiving? thanks

I don't think the cam and the heads have anything to do with how your MAF behaves. These are older cars they are sometimes a bit picky about being messed with.

This may sound like a crazy thing to say on this board but having owned both I can make this comparrision freely.

I think that mechanically Mustangs are designed better than the Camaro's and Firebirds.

I still think that the Mustangs (At least the Fox bodies) are ugly and they have an even cheaper interior than the third gen F-bodies do. Not to mention their electrical system sucks. At least it did on my 1986.

The thing is if you start making mods to your engine the thing you have to worry about is not your MAF. You need a custom chip for your ECU. The default values and it's ability to learn is severly comprimised when dealing with high power mods.

I think the Mustangs computer may just be better at handling these kinds of things.

Granted I am making this statement based of my experiences owning both cars. I also have alot of friends who drive either F-Bodies or Mustangs. This just seems to be the case with what I have observed.

Less refined code, more room for errors and mfg deviations.

That's possible. I know from my old Mustang that they are a little easier to work on. Outside of the engine and under the hood I think those things are pieces of crap. The new ones are better quality wise. But I don't like them Vs. an F-Body. I have always like TA's and Camaros better even though I don't care for most GM vehicles. I have always thought of myself as more of a Ford person.

Of course i'd like to point out that the only Fords I would own are all trucks. I don't like any of their cars outside of the Mustang.

thanks for clearing that up, i have also got the idea that mustangs tend to be easier and cheaper to mod. i am selling my car now and i woudl liek to get a 89-93 mustang and see how it is and witch i liek better. I think i will like the mustang more because they are fuel injected and i love the ease of it and the gas milage. also i must bang gears and the tremec for the fox bodys is much much less then our cars. well thanks again

It's actually an ECM not an ECU but that is splitting hairs. The MAF is actually a better system, as compared to Speed Destiny when it comes to adapting to cam changes without a custom prom but speed density is more detailed and can be refined farther when you start burning proms.

I think my MAF unit works pretty decent with an ahhhhhhh fairly large cam:

242/242 .610 lift solid roller

You can see the details in the sig for the rest of the story. trust me you will not have any issues with the MAF adapting, some minor tweaking of the prom with certainly liven things up, but that is necessary with any major mod, on any ECM base.
