Those aren't half bad times for a minor bolt-on 305, especially with the kind of traction probs you had...good luck in the future.

Why does smoking up the street tires make you a rookie? Street tires offer very little launching ability unless you heat em up!

some dude at the track said it was mainly for people with slicks. most of the guys with slicks went thru the water. all the people with street tires never went thru the water. i agree though, heating ur tires up does make you hook up better ne racer will tell ya that.

Not really with street tires. As street tires burn off, they get oily instead of sticky. The point of doing a burnout with DR's or Slick's is because they get really sticky when they start to burn off. The reason for the water box is that slicks are really hard to get to break loose even when dry. It just helps the cars out a little to break them loose on the burnout.

Ovrclck350 is right. When you're at the track there is not real advantage of creating a lot of smoke with street tires. You just want to spin them a couple of times just to get the dirt and rocks off of them and stay away from the water.

to there being no point to burning out on street tires. All tires are different, you have to experiment to find out what really works for you. I had great success burning the snot out of the dunlop SP5000s on my car last year. If i didnt get into third gear and keep 'em up for a few seconds to get heat into them, then i would not hook.

Thats the only reason i bought a second set of wheels for drag radials. I had no problem running 1.8 60's on real street tires. I did have a problem with burning up $300 in tires in a summer to do it.

BTW, right, of course you don't take treaded tires into the water box, EVEN drag radials. With a pure street tire you shouldn't even need any wetness to get them going. With drag radials you might need to back into the damp section after the water box. But with tread, if you go through the deep water, all you have done is filled the tread with water which is going to fly into the wheelwell when you burn out, which will drip on your tires as you stage, killing traction.

I still say don't do burnouts with street tires. Maybe it depends on the ones you have but all of the ones I have had seemed to get slicker the more you smoked them. You do need to spin them a few times to get the dirt and rocks off though. I guess itr just depends on the street tires.

I agree with Ed. I had consistent 2.0 60 ft's on street tires just doing a quick spin to clean them off. On one pass, I had to wait for the other guy to pull up, so I backed up and spun them hard a second time. This resulted in a 1.91 60 ft. So getting street tires a little hotter did work for me, and do avoid the water box. All it will do it put water in your treads.
