Ignition Timing

I've been having random starting problems the last few weeks. Ok, my wife decided to take my car after I told her three times not to cause I hadn;t fixed the starting problem. So, now, my car sits at the grocery store parking lot all alone. My buddy and I noticed that the distributor is faily easy to move and as we turn it one way or the other, the car gets easier and or harder to turn over depending on which way we turn it. However, the car will still not start.
How is it possible to set the ignition timing if the car will not start in the first place? I've got an 89 IROC 350 auto tranny.

Bring a jump box or jumper cables with you and just put a light on it while your cranking it.

If you had your buddy turn it both ways while trying to start it, It seems to me that it most likely should have started and the problem is something else.

Well, part of the problem is that after two or three times trying to start it with the timing bad, the injectors get somewhat gasoline soaked and even if I was to get the timing correct enough to start, the plugs were already saturated. Anyway, the IROC is safe in the hands of my mechanic and I should ahve her back tomorrow after work.
