Where to run #s on a block?

I just got a new block a few days ago and i wanted to know where to run the numbers on it to find out "SURE" info on it. The man told me its a 350 out of a old Van but doesnt know what year or anything else. Where is the number? On the back side (opposite water pump) the a number that says *3970010* and top of that it says GM4. Does that mean anything?
