86-88 IROC Z w/TPI parts car.....

I have in my garage at this time an 84 LG4 305. I have asked a few questions before on this section of the board about getting a TPI system to put on it.

Well I may have a chance to get an 86-88 (don't know specifically) IROC Z camaro. The car has some body damage, rust, and a bad freeze plug on the block, but I just am looking to purchase the car for the "prized" TPI setup. The car is a 305 TPI with automatic.

I would take the TPI and accessories off the ROC and transplant them to my "good" 305 block. Will this work? What I mean is will the heads, intake and accessories work on my older block?

I would sell the rest of the Irocs parts but keep what I need for the "Build up the Bird" project.

I hear it is always best to get a donar car and swap over so I have everything. We did that with my brother's camaro too...

Let me know if there is any problems I would face if I get this swap going.

Just wondering if the rearend in that car is a 9 bolt or a 10 bolt.
The reason i'm asking is that i'm looking for a 3 series 9 bolt carrier. So if it came with the 9 bolt with 3.27's or 3.45's i would be interested in taking it off your hands.
Thanks

Im not sure on the rear in the car. I decoded the VIN and RPO's a while back but lost the sheet. The rear on my bird may be on its way out to pasture so I will keep you in mind if I have to keep it or if I can get rid of it. Its a drum set up too im sure.

So can anyone tell me if I would have any troubles swapping over the engine parts??

If it is an '86 there will be no problem, if it is an 87+ the center intake bolt holes will be at the wrong angle for your heads. However, the holes can be reamed out at the proper angle (someone sells a kit for doing this with a drill guide block) so it will bolt up. After that it is all a matter of wiring. Not sure of the CR on your engine, but it may be lower than the TPI's 9.5:1, so the power gains from the TPI transplant may not be as impressive as you'd like.

Well, I would take everything off the 84 LG4. Down to the block and rebuild it with the stuff off of the TPI car.

I would swap the heads, intake, (tpi obviously), and rebuild the motor with fresh parts.

would this still be a problem with the head bolt holes? Would it be a waste of time and money to rebuild the whole motor?

Keep in mind that Im not looking for a screamer here. I just want to get more power than my 2.5L Iron Duke has to offer.

Man the "prized" TPI is a pain in the ***. It will give you more **** than you'll ever want to put up with. And will probably only make 275 hp at best. I love my TPI but I've had 7 years of troubleshooting it and I still haven't got all the bugs worked out...

Just look at all the "I have my new TPI swapped in and now it won't start" posts on this forum. I''d go right to an LT1 intake if I was going to start from scratch...

I'm probably going to get flamed for this post but it's the truth...

I can see some problems with the iroc harness conversion, if you do what I did and swap in the entire tpi dash harness, the cluster plugs probably won't reach where your originals do, lighter and several other things are different as well like headlight switch wiring, you'll need the firebird air cleaner system, you'de probably also want to consider if you would want a serpentine belt drive, which I put on mine and love it, personally if I were you I'de skip the iroc and look for a dirt cheap junk 88 up formula with the tpi, this way you have the correct dash harness to run tpi all the correct fuel lines and sensors, and you will be up and running in no time, mine was a 82 trans am with LG-4, I added edelebrock headers, TPI, serpentine belt drive, twin electric cooling fans, and a 5 speed, even running somewhat poorly it still out does the stock configured LG-4.

Thanks for the tips on the wiring. I already new that I would run into trouble wiring the dash and such. I suppose I could use the Camaro dash and console but that would defeat the purpose of my wanting to keep the car stock looking everywhere but under the hood.

I can't seem to find a decent donar Formula or T/A anywhere in my area. Everything Ive seen has been IROCs.

I guess I could pull an interior harness from a bird at a junk yard or something.

thanks for the tips.
