Just a couple questions
im getting a 91 z29 w/ a 305 tpi w/ a 5 spd at the end of this month, cause im sick of my lil 2.8. now i want to mod the 305 just a little bit because im in the process of building a 383 stroker for it. what should i do to the 305 to help it our for now. i was thinkin ignition and some headers,i know i can use that for the 383 also. .maybe a cam."not for the 383" whats everyones suggestions.thanx
Obviously, buy items that will benefit the 383 but won't make the 305 any worse.
Ignition upgrades are good, cat-back exhaust system, headers, etc.
The TPI on the 383 is going to defeat your purpose if you don't help it breathe better at higher rpms. As a minimum you're going to need higher flowing runners and baseplate, as well as a ported plenum to match. A 58 mm throttle body will also be necessary.
However, if it's within your budget, I highly recommend a shorter runner manifold such as a TPIS Mini Ram, Holley Stealth Ram, or Accel Super Ram (a lot of Rams, huh?).
Even with the higher flowing runners and baseplate, it's still going to be restrictive above 4500 rpm due to the massive lung capacity of a 383. But I garauntee one thing, with the amout of torque you're going to have out of a TPI 383, I would NOT want to be the next ricebucket that ends up next to you at a red light!

Hey man that means we are gonna have 3 383 third gens running around phoenix, how cool is that! I went the Superram direction but also ported the *** right out of the parts! I matched the SR runners to the gaskets and then matched the base runner openings to the gaskets. I ported the base to the diameter of the runners, 1.8 inch, and then hogged out the base to 1.8 about halfway down, I am sure you see where I am going with this. So anyway my advice is if you go with the SR you need to port the *** out of it as the base could limit a larger motor in a as cast form, and I am talking about porting aftermarket not stock bases.
