I am getting ready to put tpi on my 89 chevy 1/2 ton truck. I will be using my stock short block for know. what cam would be good for a truck? I will be using pro lightning heads. Probably 180cc. I will get an aftermarket manifold and runners ( any recomendations). I have a 700r4 tranny and a 3.42 rearend. any help would be great.

I can't help much, but I can tell you that I'm doing some similar stuff to my truck.
I put some heads on and that alone helped a bunch.
I'm getting a cam this wk. I think. I lucked out and found a complete roller setup on ebay.
I decided not to put a lot of cam into mine cause I use it as a work truck and under normal use I don't get much above 2100 rpm except on entrance ramps or for passing.
The cam I'll be using will be about 202 in/ 208ex @.050.
I'm going to add a TPI later, I'm sure it will work great!

A stock TPI might be a good idea, you'll save some $$ that way.
I'm assuming that yours is a 350.

Best of luck!

Really depends on what you are going to use it for. If for a traditional work like truck then a duration as mention would be good. Since you are going after market runners guess you want a little more umph. Summit sells a nice cam for cheap that might be right up your alley:

214/224 duration at .005.

the ZZ4 cam or ZZ409($$$) are good cams. the zz4 is cheap for a roller cam, and the 409 can be VERY expensive, but gives you good power. i got my zz4 for 120 shipped to me. Not bad when most roller cams are in the 200+ range. also, look to get a tad bit bigger TC to really take hold of that power.

Just curious but how are you planning on making the computer work with the truck? I have a complete TPI set up I was thinking on putting in my 89 350 4x4 till I found out that the computer was controlling the cruise control etc. Are you planning on totally rewiring the truck using camaro parts? I am really interested in this swap myself. Keep us up on what happens.

I put a carb on mine, cause I had a fire and part of the harness was burned. I plan on getting a TPI soon but for now, on my '88 the cruise is working and there is no ECM at all.
