Confused about TPI cam choice
I'm looking for the best cam for my TPI setup. I know the stock TPI is "bottleneck" at about 4500 rpm. Thats why I dont want a "hi rev" cam. I want to increase my power between 1500 and 5000. What is the best cam for my application???
From my search on this board,Crane compucam 2032 looks like a good choice. Or the Comp XR264 looks good too.
I can have the ZZ4 cam for cheap, but the .510 exhaust lift looks to much for stock heads.
Can someone help me chosing the "good" cam for my application??? From your experiences, what can you recommand to me??
Thanks

I just bought that Comp XR264 cam. Haven't put it in yet, but I'm expecting well over 400 hp with the rest of my engine combo based on what I've been reading about similar ZZ4 build-ups. It's a good midrange camshaft with potential for top end as well. For you, it would work very well I'm sure.
My current ZZ4 cam does really well even with my top end Mini-Ram manifold. But it is very well mannered at low speeds and produces a lot of torque as well.

your best choice would probably be to have the heads cut for bigger springs, should only cost $100-$200 then about $80 for springs up to .600 lift. Yeah the 264HR will give you the power band that your looking at having. Or another idea would be to upgrade your stall and go with the 270HR just so it won't bog off the line. Just a thought, don't know how far you plan on pushing your car.

I just posted this on another question, when I saw this thread.
regarding cam, When I had my engine rebuilt I got the Crane 2032 cam, Best performance (mild) cam I have tried, very pleased with it. good in the 2000 to 5500 rpm range. Idle still very good and it runs perfect on the stock chip, if you bump fuel pressure a few points up.
there was a big difference in acceleration with just the cam change..everything else being stock! have no numbers though, but it was very noticable. When I got my trickflow heads there was an increase as well, and everything else was still stock.

I dont think the zz4 cam would be too much for stock heads. I have a custom ground camshaft recently installed, but havent ran yet. I shaved the heads, and gasket matched them, and did some mild porting. Its a 292 dur. with a .515 lift with 1.5 rockers. Now am I saying that these heads are ideal, but until I can afford good ones..... anyway your factory heads would be fine if you "open" the up a little. I am buying conical valve springs that can be installed on stock spring seats, so you dont have to machine them, and support lift a little over .500''. I can afford to get the seats cut, but cannot find a machine shop worth a **** to do it.
