But you cant argue, that buying a LS1 from 12-30K, putting on a set of Nittos, Lid, catback, 150nitrous kit and running mid/high 11s and 7.3s in the 1/8isnt a freaking deal. i cant wait until i put on headers, Ypipe and remove the cats and shave off a few more tenths. And if get brave enough and get faith in my tranny holding up, i can bolt in a 3200 stall and might see 10s if my tranny dosent explode on the way down the track.

wow, this thing got long
Me:
Former 12 second 3rdgen owner
Former cherry 3rdgen owner
Current cherry nearly 12 second 4thgen owner
They are all great.
Comparing them them is stupid.
It took alot of work for me to get my '88 to run 12.87 @ 106.xx
and so far my '01 has run 13.23 and 107.42 in much worse air, and on a similar 60 ft, it would most likely take the '88 on ET.
Do I think my LS1 is a godly engine, no. Do I like the power it has, sure. I thought the same about the 357 in my '88. But like mentioned above, because the LS1s already come with great heads, intakes, etc. It usually takes (such as in my case) such mods to get on that playing field when working with a 3rd gen. Its that simple. Its not rocket sience, it shouldn't make anybody mad.
Does my LS1 have piston slap? you betcha
Did my '92 have anything like that (stock-vs-stock)? no
There's always tradeoffs.
I have also met the cocky 4th gen owners, actually ran across one the other night. He thought he was big fish for running high 12s with a bunch of mods, actually put his own CAI on!
But I can also recall all the cocky 3rd gen owners I have come across as well, it the same chit. Only they thought they could talk smack cause they just busted a 14.
Same with the fox body owners. We all know the guy who thinks his 5---0 with pullies can whip anybody.
Oh, and lets not forget the '89 4 door Accord owner who dropped his front bumper at the track, took off his hood and interior panels. then proceeded to crack a high 16. he gave me that look, ya know. I was put in my place for sure....I peed my pants I think.
Its all trivial, and I think when you let it bother you too much it takes away from what we love to do with our cars.
So I'll leave it at that.

I have never put down a 3rd gen either on the street or on this board and have never been put down on the street while I'm in my IROC and have yet to see any negative posts about 3rd gens on any LS1 board that I've been on. Damn, they're ALL F-BODYS!!

As for being put down by others:
YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT'S LIKE TO BE PUT DOWN UNLESS YOU OWN A 305 LO3 TBI.
If I was building a TPI I'd get the very best stuff I could afford. If the AFR's make more power get them. Never skimp on the heads. If you skimp on the heads, sooner or later when you get beat you'll be wishing you got the AFR's when you doing the motor because it less hassle then.

Ive been embarrassed by 3rdgens at the track alot.. When you line up next to a 3rdfen, one of two things will happen. You will either waste the 3rdgen or the 3rdgen will smoke u like no tomorrow... just an observation...

Well, im glad you all relize some of us are cool now.
Ill admit, i did get kind of cocky one time.... I was at a hangout spot and there were some mustangs out everyone thought was gods.. A 2003 cobra and a Salleen... I was slicked up that night with a nice warm bottle feeling froggy and reved to like 5K as i passed by them and the crowd standing around them.. I had never seen a 2003 cobra yet this was when they were fairly new, just heard about how fast they were with a chip, pullies, exhaust, ect..... Well, this guy had all that and apperantly the faster one between him and the salleen.... It wasent the supercharged version of the salleen so he didnt really want any action... But i didnt expect to win against the cobra, i ran an 11.50 but before this race i didnt know what my car runs becaus it hasent been to the track yet then, i exopected my car to mabey run an 11.90 best. The 03 cobra guy had beat my friends built 1995 GT, and apperantly was out there calling himself "the man to beat", he actually said that..... Even though at the time i hadent really been beat either and ran more people then him since my cars been around longer... But i didnt expect to do good against this guy, he was open about his dyno numbers and i read them on his site proir, he was putting out 462hp and similiar torque numbers... Even thought my buddies were telling me i would get him, i thought i was gonan get smoked... Well, my buddy went over and talked to the guy to ask him to run. He said sure, he asked his buddies about my car and they all said i would be easy money.
So we go out, we run from a dead stop and i get him by like 5 cars... (slicks to street tires)
His fault for agreeing to that right? But he asks to go again for a roll, we went from a 20mph roll and i broke it off in his azzz again.... This time not as bad though... He hooked and on slicks my car bogs at higher speeds once i get rolling.. But it was a few cars ahead. I got pretty cocky that night, but i got better once i got to the track and relized that even though i ran a few 11.50s, not one of my time slips had "winner" printed under it.

I dont hook consistantly yet either... On drag radials, sometimes i can nail it off the line on motor and after about say a foot distance after i move, i can spray and the car will grab and go like a dream. And Ill run those times... Sometimes, it will get crazy on me and spin like crazy...

man alot of you 4th gen guys are not upto par on L98's
for 3k you could run high 12's low 13's all day long and thats at the most no nitrous either. granted it is easier to do in a L98 vette but i'm sure it can be done in a L98 F-Bod.
3.73 gears 300 bucks
intake 800
cam 400
52 mm TB 250
a set of L98 aluminum corvette heads 500
ported polished and punched 400
*OR* ported polished punched stockers 400 save 500
300-650 for a good stall converter
3300 for maximum still cheap performance
2450 for cheaper route and probably only 2-3 tenths slower at most
lets add 600 for labor unless you can do it yourself and if you can get exhaust for another 700.
4k or 3150 depending on your budget.
lets say you bought a used L98 Iroc with 60k on the clock for 5k add a 500 dollar buffer for odds and ends and your still below 10k for a nice ride that keeps up with stock LS1's and 03 Cobra's. granted newer technology wins out in the long run but dollar for dollar it's always cheaper to go with an older car. also added in this equation is knowing how to do the work yourself and or knowing people that can get you parts or using E-Bay for good quality used parts. also knowing a good shop that won't burn you on labor. they are out there again just got to know the people that know these guys. nothing wrong with hand-me down parts like intake, heads and even low milage cams/torque converts/rear gears. i'm sure we all had or have hand me down parts on our cars now! actually i think this could get cheaper!
i say lets do it like monster garage and take a 5000 dollar collection and pick a build team to see if we can break into the 11's with a used L98
hell i bet you can find a nice decent running Iroc with a L98 for cheaper than 5k with around the same milage! 2500 bucks for a used L98 car and 2500 bucks in parts + nitrous of course and i bet it would run 11's. granted it would be a *well* used than a 5k 60k milage Iroc but hey it would be fun
how long will it run? who knows but it would be interesting to find out! after we are done part the car out to make the 5k back
BTW *most* 4th Genner's LT1's and LS1's are mostly cool up here in the Glen Burnie B-More area until you meet the kid that had a beaterz honda and mommie and daddy forked out the cash for the LS1 for a graduation present.
ok off my soap box now

It's nice to be able to out run Cobra's and Z06's. I do every time I get one to race me. It's even nicer to cream the SS and WS-6 guys (because that crowd talks the most ****). It can be done relatively cheap (compared to what the LS-1 guys have to spend) and with-out power adder's. High 11's - low 12's is easy to build. It's just hard to go faster than that with-out power adders. This is where the LS-1 guys have it made. Yea, they have to spend some $$$$, but there are naturally aspirated LS-1's in the low 10's which is way faster than any n/a TPI style motor that I've seen.
So, in retrospect, if I had to do it all over, this is what I'd do: I would build a badass heads and cam stroked LS-1 for my '91, put over 500 to the ground, get great gas mileage, pass emissions with a breeze AND have the better looks of a thirdgen F-body. The above will be in my next project car (91-92 T-tops or vert).
But I still have fun giving them hell in this one. It's funny when I pop the hood and they say "damn, it's a Tuned port???"

I always loved the people that love or hate Camaros because of the generation they were built in. The most ignorant of which is "they stopped building camaros after 1969". I am a fan of 1st gens, some second, third gens and 4th gens. Are any better then the other, yes and no. The newer cars are faster then the older ones and get better gas milage and engine life to boot. Would I like a 69 maro, hell yes, would I expect it to run 13's and get 25+ MPG, no likely...

Well put. They are all Camaros, no matter what year they were built in...granted, a 4-banger in such a car is a travesty that should never be spoken of
, but animosity between 3rd and 4th genners is truly ridiculous...I can't agree that stock 3rd gens look better than stock LS1's (with the LT1's it depends on the year of the 3rd gen), but they are all great cars...By the way, I didn't know how many LS1 forum guys were over here...nice to see ya
I absolutely love both of our 4th gens, but I'm getting a 3rd because it's something rather different and will serve as an awesome project for me. I'm shooting for 12's on my LB9 (read: heavily modded blown 305)...
