How to tell what is wrong?

Car won't start. Service engine soon light is on. How do I find out what is wrong? I just replaced the ignition module and the pickup coil. I've read about you guys referring to "throwing codes" and whatnot but I just got this car and I know little, help me out. It has spark and I smell fuel. Oh by the way its an 87 iroc 5.7

The info you seek for reading the codes can be found on the mainpage, or by searching....

But, you jump A and B (upper two right pins on the ALDL) with key on, code 12 will "flash" 3 times...blink...blink/blink...blink...blink/blink...blink...blink/blink (veiwing the SES light) then any stored codes will flash 3 times...after all stored codes, code 12 will repeat..then your stored codes come again.

i/e if you see a blink/blink/blink...blink/blink this would be a code 32.

Post what codes you have stored...usually best to unplug the battery for a few minutes first, drive the car for a while, then see what's stored.
