Piston question

Hey guys, just a quick question,

I am in the middle of rebuilding my 305, and one of the pistons is cracked on the skirt, I dont have a huge budget but still need to replace, will pistons from a 91-92 tpi305 fit in my 87 tpi305, i hear they are a bit lighter Thanks

You will have to rebalance the engine if you change to lighter pistons. Actually, I would do that anyway. One thing to keep in mind is what are you using the car for and how does it normally run. If you have pinging problems, stay away from lightweight hypereutectics. I have broken pistons two different times because of pinging. That's why I am running forged now……

If you are going to use NOS or another power adder, definitely use forged pistons!!!!!

thanks for the info, no I won't be using nitrous and there was no pinging coming from the engine, from what it looks like the top compression ring broke and from the added stress the skirt started to crack.

why not just turn the timing down a bit to get rid of the knock instead of going through two sets of pistons? Spark knock can destroy a forged piston as well, it might take longer, but wit will do the same exact thing to a forged piston as a hypereutectic
