85 TPI 305 auto -> 350 5-speed
85 TPI 305 auto -> 350 5-speed
I have an 85 IROC with stock TPI intake and computer for the 305 auto motor.
Now the car has the same stuff with a L98 350 5-speed.
The car starts great, and eventualy idles down to 750, but has a problem surging while accelerateing when it is cold.
Also has high idle (around 2200) right after startup, and while cold (around 1400).
I am new to TPI and this board. What is the best/cheepest way I can get the right PROM for this setup. (headman headers, air foil, ported heads too).
I was considering getting a Hypertech chip for an 85 Corvette. But I saw much bashing on the board for hypertech.
I am extremely experienced with buring and programing all kinds of chips, and willing to try burning my own if I can get a chip profile from somewhere to use right away. I don't have much time to play with it at the time, so I need something to get it running good quick.
I'm willing to spend up to $200 for a OEM chip, or programer + software.
Thanks a lot!

I have the exact same combination as you. TPI 350 & a 5 speed in an 85 IROC. I pitched the 85 computer and harness in favor of a newer MAF style setup. Very few people have experience burning chips for the 85 computer, plus the computer isn't nearly as sophisticated as the later style.
There are people out there who burn the 85 chips that may be able to help you, but there are a lot more who burn the later MAF stuff, and there are a lot of bins out there already for similar applications.
As for the 85 vette chip, that won't work. There were enough differences in f-body and y-body configurations, especially in 85, that will make it difficult. 85 vettes ran a different fuel pressure than f-bodies, and there were other differences. IT's a lot easier to either burn a new chip or upgrade your ECM like I did.
Mike Davis' website will give you a lot of information on this swap. I chose to use an 87 harness instead of repinning mine, because the last thing I felt like doing was tracking down wiring screw-ups for 2 months. Swapping the harness only took a couple hours and I felt it was worth it.
Anyway, mike's site... http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/mycar/

Hey guys, thanks a lot!
This prom programing stuff sounds RIGHT up my alley.
Thing is tho:
1) I'll spend $150-$200 on the burner+chips+software total
2) I don't really want to mess with yanking the 85 computer while I'm still in school and this is a daily driver.
3) What I really really need is someone else's BIN or a burnt chip that is closest to my setup to get me up and running right away asap.
Right now I'm redoing the rest of the car (interior, hood, etc.) and this will be a daily driver soon, and I need something to get me goin until I have play time. Any takers??
Thanks!

Well, as much as I'd love to, an upgrade isn't an option right now. I was supose to even have 2 newer computers and an ADL cable to put in the car, but the senior member I bought the car from just isn't answering emails or phone calls! I think he might be moveing or something, or maybe ignoreing me because he knew he sold me something messed up.
I am missing a few interior trim pieces too which he never told me about.
So guys, if anybody can burn me a 24 pin 85' 350-5-speed rom I would appericiate it. I don't have time or resources to do the computer upgrade right now or mess with doing it myself.
Thanks

I made an ALDL cable tonight. Works great.
Got a eprom programer at school. GOing to read mine tonight.
Already bought a hypertech chip for an 85 Vette 5-speed, and I'm going to try that out.
Got a few bins for various 85 setups. Going to try those too and if they work good I'll send the hypertech chip back.
Thanks for everyone's help.
