Ok well I ripped the front of the motor back down and removed the timing cover and reset the cam timing. Its set to the #1 cyclinder and the #1 piston is at TDC. The distrb. is also set in the #1 postion so everything is timed to the #1 position. so hopefully this works out. I will be putting everything back together tomorrow night so I wont know how this helped until late tomorrow night so u prolly wont hear from me till then...Irritating I tell ya

SHES ALIVE!!!

I've had it running for a little over a week now and see has all sorts of problems. First...what was keeping the car from firing was BAD timing. Rippin the motor back down to the timing chain and resettin everythin was what did it!!!

But now here are the pronlems I'm running into

Doesnt idle
charging system doesnt work
starter has a hellva time crankin the motor over. (New starter about a yr ago.)
Timing is still off. I cant set it till it idles
Knocks at about 2500 RPM
Fried an alternater belt
tranny will not shift into a gear (700r4)

This is with the new chip but the car responds better to the new chip than it did with the stock one. But I bet once this thing idles and I get the timing set it'll be a decent runner till I can have sent to ACP shop in WI.

Matt I think we need to bump up the idle RPM to about 900-1000! The car hates the low idle. I will adjust the throttle screw to hold it there for timing and warm up ands see how it likes it. I'm thinkin base timing to be set to 8* ATDC sound good?

Well I will keep you guys posted on whats goin on.

Well as of right now there have been so many things goin on with this car.

First I would just like to thank any and everyone who has helped out in this project thus far. I give a big 2 thumbs up to all.

Ok well all of the problems that I have had were from the tranny. It turns out that I installed it wrong destroying the tranny pump. So I had that rebuilt and installe dit back in. The motor cranks over way better now that its not being hung up on the broken tranny. So that took care of most of the startin and idleing problems I had. I set base timing to 8* BTDC and thats really all the further I'm goin to go for right now.

I also went out and bought an MSD box and hooked it up but of course with my luck, the car wont start. So I have to get a new box and see if that works.

I'll try and keep updatin this thread with new upgrades. I see that holley is in the process of makin a stealth ram for VORTEC heads so as soon as that comes out I'm buyin it.

Ok just browsing through really quick... the pistons you mentioned earlier are a TRW piston, and they are accepted by the NHRA, on top of that, the '40' in the middle denotes a .040 overbore, meaning that engine now has a cylinder bore of 4.040".

The reason he can't use the 305 oil pan is this: In 1986, GM went to the one piece rear main seal design. However, GM did not employ use of the center bolt head until 1987, which is a common misconception that GM switched both at the same time. There was a year difference in there .

edit: good luck with getting the bugs worked out, I know mine was a pain. I put a 1968 camaro engine in my 1990 firebird, it was interesting figuring out what worked and didn't work, but I tried to keep the schematics as original to the block that was in there, except I had to change my starter/flexplate, and a couple other little things.

Wow I have a overbore of .040!!! I thought my micrometer was off but it really was bored over that much!!! Well thanks man. As for the bugs there really werent any bugs to work out besides the whole tranny holdin everything up deal. But I to tried to keep all wire and components in their stock location.

Back from the dead but I dyno'd the car a couple weeks back. I was dissappointed with the HP numbers but impressed with the TQ numbers. The followin day after gettin the car dyno'd I took it to the track and heres the numbers I got

243 rwhp/ 343 rwtq
13.51 @ 99.26 mph

In 2 weeks I'll start my 385TT project so I'll keep ya posted on that new motor as well
