TPI wiring harness
Sorry guys, can someone please move my post to the Electronics group?
I am transplanting an L98 from a 91 Corvette into a 1991 RS. I have been trying to learn all I can about the electrical connections. I have purchased the Haynes and Chiltons manuals that cover the 91 RS and a Hayes manual that covers the 91 Corvette.
It appears that the wiring harness may be too short to reach the ECM mounting location in a 91 RS and that the ECM may be of the wrong shape/size to mount in the same location.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this type of swap. This is the first time for a swap between different car types for me. I have researched and found that Painless has a wiring harness for the TPI engine (MAP version) with extra length cables, but that wouldn't solve the ECM mounting issue. Also, the picture of the wiring harness (60203) at painlessperformance.com seems to be two connectors short at the ECM. That might be the emissions harness (60315) but I could not find any definitive information. I will probably call them to find out.
Any info regarding this swap and the ECM compatibility would be appreciated. I don't mind doing the research, but a good jump start would be nice. I would really rather not have to purchase a new wiring harness.
One other thing. I don't have the money to buy new heads up front (cam, intake, runners, new fuel and oil pump, etc. are on the initial purchase list). Does anyone know what kind of power can be derived from a set of the aluminum heads that came of the Corvette?
Thanks,
Dale

You can buy a harness for the corvette computer from TPI tech in florida. Howell also makes a '3' wire hookup for a TPI with the 90-91 corvette computer and you can get theirs long enough to put the computer under your seat.. the one from tpi tech is long enough for what you want. I am sure they could even make it longer for you.The corvette computer is a speed density system. You will need to get a chip burned without the VATS in it. i have used both of these companies products on different swaps, INMO both are a ton nicer then painless stuff.
you have the weather pack ecm that mounts in the engin compartment right? if you can find out a good way to secure it i'd say just leave it under the hood like the corvette originally had it, otherwise you will most likely need the longer harness so it will reach to under the dash, and if it is the weather pack ecm then you will again either need to kinda rig it up there, or replace it with a regular ecm, and use the camaro ecm mounting bracket.
as for the heads pretty decent power can be made with proper porting, but you can also sell them for a pretty penny too, so if your after power you could probably sell them for $300-600 (i havent checked what they sell for recently) and buy a set of dart iron eagle or pro action iron heads (for about $800 assem.), if your stuck in the aluminum thing pro action makes some good ones and AFR is the SH*T! but i believe they are around $1300-2000 on ebay... depending on how much power you intend to make i would either keep stock and do some home porting if you know how, or sell em and buy some dart iron eagles... that stock TPI unit is real restrictive as well though, i'd recomend an LT1 swap or an HSR for the money

Does anyone know if the ECM/ECU is the same from the TBI 305 (same connectors), and could I simply move the PROM from the current L98 ECM to the existing ECM?
Thanks
Thanks
