Tpi, head choice
In an '87 Formula, I have a 355 shortblock, flat tops, and a cam similar to the HOT cam w/1.6 rockers, stock tpi, T.B., runners, 305 heads, 700R4, 3.23 rear. I want to end up in the 12's for now. I want to replace heads/intake system. Should I wait for the possibility of a SR/vortec head combo, or go with super ram/miniram, etc. Obviously, AFR's are great, but so is the price. Any help is appreciated.
Well to be honest, if 12's is your goal....
Why not replace the heads with something better and keep the TPI for now?
With a good exhaust, a few simple tweaks to the stock TPI system, good heads, cam, and a good tune...with any kind of traction, there's no reason you shouldn't break into the 12's.
Suspension and gears will be big players here too...as well as a better torque converter.
Ask you local machine shops if they have any good used performance heads for sale...happens all the time around here when people don't have the $$$ to pick up their parts right around race season.
