Random Code 34
OK Guys, I have been tolerating a random code 34 problem for the last two years. It's on my 88 GTA. Over the past year I have replaced the MAF, power and burnoff relays. I have checked the wiring. The problem appears to be truly random but when the code does set the car idles rough and seems to be in limp mode. If I shut it of and wait 30 seconds and re-start 90% of the time it restarts fine. There are very few mods to this car and the ECM is still stock. Has anyone run across this before?? HELP!
Have you checked out your O2 sensor? I had the same problem and it was finally fixed with a new O2. Does that MAF have a warranty? Trade it in for a new one, could be faulty, could be your wiring. You're going to have to make it code then check the voltage to the relays and MAF. I did the hunt and peck thing for eight months until I finally ran down the culprit. Luckily, I have a good mechanic and a spare car to check out parts. Good Luck. A few posts up there is a code 34 post with the rundown from a GM service manual, check it out.

If you have a NAPA parts store around and need an O2 sensor, try them. This month they have a $10 rebate on their Bosch O2 sensors, and they told me its only about $20..... so pick one up for about $10 after rebate!

The O2 Sensor is new, about 300 miles on it. I had the OEM AC one fail late last summer and that drove me nutz since I had just replaced injectors and thought that one was bad. So I can rule out O2.
Could be the MAF but I also have one that ran fine on my friend steve's camaro and it codes randomly the same way. I am suspicious of the connector to the MAF power relay. It seems to have some type of sealant injected into the back of the connector shell. That sealant looks to have creaped onto the contacts. This conncector looks cheap compared to the other relay connectors under the hood.

I too Have a 88 GTA, With the same problem , and I have replaced the Maf Sensor ( not cheap ) replaced the burn off relay and the Maf Relay on the firewall .. drivers side. Ive replaced about 85-90% of the vacumme Hoses and found and repaired vacumme leakes. The Connector To the Maf relay on mine too had some goo in it and did not seem to seat correctly to the relay , so I sniped the connector, took it apart and cleaned it and re spliced the wires and it is now nice and tight. Whats left?.. I have not replaced my O2 sensor yet.. perhaps this weekend... I have not checked for power to the maf Sensor.. What should it read normaly and how do I check it and if it is off, where should I look then>
