random clicking at low idle
I just finished a TPI swap on my 305. I have all the stuff to program chips, and i think the tune is almost right. anyways, once the engine has been running for a while, it starts to make a funny clicking noise at idle. example: I drive to work on the freeway, and when i take my exit and sit at a red light, the engine will make an audible "click" and sort of stumble. there is absolutely no pattern to the clicking either. sometimes it will just do one and then another in a few seconds, other times it is back to back clicking. I noticed last night that if the car is angled with the front up, it clicks more than if the car is angled with the front down
What could this click be? Is it something in the tuning? Injector? FPR? fuel pump (walbro 255)?
I have stock L03 heads, LT1 cam, 3.42 posi, MSD 6A, standard AC Delco plugs gapped according to the MSD specs (could these be the culprit?). Any help is greatly appreciated.
also, the engine sometimes makes a clattering noise on acceleration. I have taken out spark in the tables, added fuel, tuned with *i think* VE master (cant remember the name of the program, but it takes a datamaster file and changes up your tables).... Why is it clattering? I am now trying a tank of 93 octane to see if that helps. The car seemed to run better with 350 fuel tables instead of the modified 305 tables... any input is great!

I have had several different episodes of clicking. Your best bet would to probably get your car up on ramps and get underneath to get a better idea of where the sound is coming from to cancel out probabilites.
But the two that I have had that I can recall that were kinda of unusuall to hunt down were when my smog pump went out it slowly made a clicking and then loud clicking sound.
My latest was a cracked fly wheel that made a very noticable click it sounded like a broken rocker arm except for the fact that it wasnt repetative it just did it when it wanted to until I got under neath then it sounded like it was coming from the torque converter, every single car I have this has happened to after spinning up to 7500 or more rpms.(if this is the case get an sfi approved one)
oh hey another thing pull timing out of your burn or at the distributor if your getting valve clatter thats detonation it will destroy a modified motor.

Well It seems that you are talking about two types of noise a clicking at idle and another valve clatter upon accleration.
If you feel that the detonation clatter is not being sensed by you ecm there is a good possibility that your knock sensor isnt working. There are two simple ways to test it. One would be to run a diagnostic tool and see when you rev your motor that some timing is being(pulled out) controlled by the ecm . with out a diagnostic tool - Another way is to get a metal pipe or something long and hit the block with it idleing while watching the timing with a timing light it should be very noticable to the eye that your timing is being pulled out by the ecm on the tab when it senses metal to metal knock.
PM me I noticed you live in Houston also It would be no problem for me to try and help you find it this weekend.

I don't think that the idle clicking is associated with the clattering. The ECM does pull timing at WOT, but not all the time, and not much timing.... Are you going to the summer gathering in July? Thanks for your help!

Yes if I am going to try and make it. Have you found the noise out at idle yet?
Is there going to be another meet in Humble this year?

We are starting to think that the click is electrical related.... when we have more time, we will look at it closer. thanks for the help though!
not sure about humble.... i think its just going to be the track this year. That should be some fun, even if my lil' 305 takes a beating
