Car Stalling At Idle in Park

Hello Everyone, I'm new to the Website and I have a few questions about my 89' Trans am GTA. The main problem I have is when my car is in Neutral or park, the RPM's go up, then down, then up, then down, sometimes it even stalls. I don't know what the problem is and I was wondering if someone could give me suggestions on what to check, thanks alot. Also, I was wondering what I should set my fuel pressure at with my AFPR.

Ok since i'm going through the same crap, check your IAC(idle air control) valve, also check the TPS. Check for vacuum leaks too. I have done all of these steps, and replaced the dist cap and rotor, and am still having the same friggen problem, plus mine will stall if i put it in gead and don't give it some gas.

My next option is ingnition module and ECU.

Re: Car Stalling At Idle in Park

I have an 89 T/A. I am having a overheating problem and a stalling problem at the same time. I am almost certain both are related but have no idea where to start. Will stall while driving but starts right up. I can accelerate but when I decellarate thats when it stalls. I have already replaced the thermo and did two radiator flushes (lots of sediment came out, almost a handful of what looks like sand). I also repalced pcv valve. Other than that, not sure what to do. Hits around 220 after about 1/2 hour of driving. Radiator gurgles after parking. Car is mint in original condition with only 28k miles.

Re: Car Stalling At Idle in Park

does your car have one big electric fan or two, could be that your fan is burnt out or on its way out, have you checked to see if it comes on? I would also KEEP doing rad flushes until its clean (No sand at ALL) and also use a 50/50 mix.(use distilled water, it works the best), when finished. There are also additives that you put in your rad like "Water Wetter" by "Red Line" and "Royel Purple" has there own brand that's the same, These products helps the coolent cool faster. As for your stalling issue, it could be alot of things...

wow everyones all over the place in this thread.

ill answer you first. sounds like you have a vacuum leak, a way to check is spraying some carb cleaner and seeing if the idle gets higher or smooths out. next check your Throttle Position Sensor voltage, also could be an Idle Air Control Valve so try spraying carb cleaner in the throttle body, or if you wanna go further, pull out the IACV and clean it. if you have a scanner you can hook it up to the car and see if its actually moving, or i know some auto part stores will check your IACV for free.

if it feels like theres no loss of power when you do get on the throttle it sounds like more of an IACV problem.

also set your AFPR to stock PSI, you can try going up from there in small increments

Re: Car Stalling At Idle in Park

I have two fans and they do work when the a/c is running in thr max position. I thought the same thing. I guess I will keep checking the board and see what comes up.
