I have a 1991 Pontiac firebird (GTA) 350 5.7 liter that has a surging/idling problem. found out this was being caused by
two bad injectors. want to replace all 8 injectors but gm wants
$144.27 a piece for these gm p/n 17086545. can anybody help
with a good oem replacement part number. If you could
supply part number and manufacturer it would be much appreciated. are there other gm injectors that could be used
in place of the stock p/n 17086545 because there are no
listings on E-Bay or other parts sights for the stock injector.

Opinions vary on what is the best fuel injectors to use.
Personally, I went with Accel 24# injectors.
They can be found at places such as Summit (www.summitracing.com) for around $230 (price is for all 8).
I believe the ones I ordered were Summit part# ACC-150824.

Hope this helps.
Best of Luck.

SLP has injectors for $100. They are 25 lb/hr @ 3 bar. Have no experiece with them, though. Might want to run a quick seach for them, first.

Again thxs for the info I'll also check into these injectors. One
point that I would like to make is that I want something that
is fairly reliable. Don't want to pay the gm price but willing
to pay between $200-$400 because I don't want this same problem 6 months to a year from now. The original injectors
didn't start to go bad until I had approx 80,000 miles on them.
Keep the info coming....thxs

Why don't you just send your injectors to Cruzin Performance and have him work his magic on 'em. You'll have a better matched set as well.

Red Devil,
thxs for the info e-mail cruzin performance to see if they
could help. Six of the injectors are reading 14-16 ohms but
two are reading 4-5 ohms. Asked if he could replace the bad
coils from his web site wasn't sure if he did this or not.

IMO there are parts that you can rebuild, or replace with used ones, but when it comes to spark, and fuel I use new parts, The dealer is the last place I buy unless I can't get it anywhere else.
I use a Holly Fuel Pump, Adjustable Regulator, Barry Grant Inline filter along with the stock filter, and Accel 30# Injectors in my 388.

You don't necessarily need to buy the best, just good consistant performers.

Im having the same problems with my almost stock '88 Formula and want to change the injectors as well.
How difficult is this, and what tools do you need, anything tricky to watch for?

i went with accel 150824 theres a guy on ebay i bought them from....he sells them dirt cheap...can buy brand new accel 22stock or 24lbs for 209....good thing about accel is that it is an OEM replacemnt meaning it has the bosch pinpoint II spray style design...meaning will work just like stock..

For those suggesting new over the flow matched rebuilt, I hate to tell you this, but not many sets come flow matched from the factory. I would really rather send mine to Rich at Cruzin and get back a matched set than more oem style (tolerances too) new injectors. My opinion anyway.

red devil,
talked to Rich at cruzin performance and on the 1991's they
used multec injectors which he said has the highest failure
rate of any injector installed on TPI. Also, the coils are not
serviceable so he didn't want to touch these. suggested
older oem 1985 thru 1988 to be serviced or Accel or Ford/SVO
injectors.

Ug. The grey Multecs? I had those on my '89. Now has Ford ones. That I sent out to get flow matched. Sorry to hear that. The multecs are crappy injectors though.

I would go with the accel 23lbs ones. They are closer to the computers 22lbs programming then the 24's.

As far a reliability, how do the accel's hold up. Has anyone
had problems with these injectors say after 6 months to
a year after installation?

I have a set of 19lb. Accel's and have had nothing but problems.
After about 10K miles one stuck open and now just the other day after about another 5K miles another one is stuck wide open.
I have a great contact at Mr. Gasket (the company affiliated with Accel) and he is going to hook me up with a good flow matched set. I personally didn't have any problems with the Multecs. I have noticed that the Bosch style is prone to plugging and sticking. My friend at Mr. Gasket says that they have switched suppliers for the Accel injectors and the injectors from the new supplier are much better.

Do NOT get ACCEL fuel injectors. I'm having horrible problems with mine and I'm about ready to give up on them. We cannot get them to work right. FASTCHIP, the number one maker of custom chips will NOT do any work with anyone that is using ACCEL injectors. I called them to see if they could make a chip to get these POS's to work right and they refused to even try. They told me if I put in different fuel injectors they would then help me if I still needed it. They told me that they have had so many problems with customers with ACCEL injectors that they no longer do any business covering them. They have found that most are not flow matched and actually flow a lot lower than their advertised rating. They said my 26's were probably closer to 23's.

All the people I've talked to about my troubles have recommended changing out the fuel injectors for 30 lb. Ford Motorsport injectors.

On the ford/svo injectors 24lb/hr is as close to stock that I can
get. I was told that they will actually flow slightly higher due to
the higher fuel pressure GM systems operates at. Has anyone
with the 24lb injectors had any problems running them in a stock
motor?

Ford Order No.: FMS-M9593A302
24 lbs.
Depends on the day, but did run rich as IIRC they really flow a GM corrected 25.3 or 26.3 lbs/hr. or some such instead of the 22.

If memory serves the yellow ones are Ford rated 19 lbs./hr and would probably suffice. I'll see if I still have the order number around

Fuggers.

I screwed the correction.

Ford rates at 39.1 GM at 43.5 so if I did the math right...
Ford rating
19
24
GM rating
21.14
26.7

Roughly as I'm just playing with the math.

And the FOMOCO order no. for the 19 lb.:FMS-M9593C302

Mike, just put the Accels in my car this Sunday, no long term knowledge. Choice between Ford or Accel was a no brainer for me, no Ford parts here. Seems to run fine, maybe just a bit lean on startup in open loop, maybe. Barely can feel it if so. After I run them a couple hundred miles I'll scan it and see if the ECM is making any correction for this. Seems to have taken care of my problems for sure though. tom

A shame they are Bosch units then. I guess you don't like the ones they made for GM either eh? I'd like to know who makes the ones for Accel.

Sorry, couldn't resist the Ford dig. If the injectors in my Camaro were Bosch units, they were nothing to brag about. Curious myself as to who makes these injectors. Notice Holley also sells similiar pieces, double the price. Since Holley is a part of Mr.Gasket too, seems a little strange maybe.

Well Holley isn't part of Mr. Gasket.
There are two people who make the accel injectors, I am pretty sure they are Siemens and Stadard electric.

By golly you're right, Holley is still independent and actually owns several big named products too. Also noted my old injectors were stamped with RP, assume Rochester Products? Not Bosch. Learn something every day. Might explain the failure of these Multec injectors to some extent.

Your problem may not be the type of injector but the size. The 26's are probably way too small for that motor. I am thinking about going with SVO 36# for my 450+HP 383. If Ford rates their injectors at 39.1 and GM at 43.5, wouldn't the GM version of a Ford 36# be larger? May like a 40#?

I have had great performance with my Accel 30 lb injectors.. with my stock 350 injectors I was getting a terrible 'stumble' and I tried cleaning them in my ultrasonic cleaner but no change... I bought the Accels and have been happy with them.

Take injector X. You want to rate it. If I rate it at 30 psi rail pressure and you do it at 40. I'll get, say 30# and you'll get 40#. Now if you suggest say a 20# injector for your app and use one of yours, ok, use one of mine and it will flow more than your 20# rated one would. (was that clear or just confusing?)

It's like when you get flow readings ona moanifold or head, you have to see the reference. My math was simple, I took the (ford rate/ford psi constant)*GM psi constant and got the rough conversion.

Try running it with that one injector unplugged. Will miss and all but should give you an indication of whether it will fix the problem. Are you getting a service engine light on? Maybe a bad MAF reading - or just plain old fashioned weak ignition.
