EGR To be or not to be?

I would like to know if anyone has blocked off their EGR funtions? Correct me if I'm wrong but is'nt the EGR system only for pollution or smog? On a car originally for use in California but now in a state where the pollution equipment is not required what would one benefit by blocking off the EGR at the manifold? What all would need to be disconnected? Ie; The egr solonoid sensor? Would the promm need to be reprogrammed or will it just run ok by buying a block off plate and disconnecting the solonoid? The car in question is a '89 Camaro with a '91 Corvette L98 motor.

The corvette motor uses a egr tube that is attached to the manifold and then the other end of the tube bolts to a bung in the exhaust (in my case to the exhaust headers). Does the actual EGR need to be removed and a plate be placed there as well or will blocking off the hole of the EGR tube be enough? Remember the Corvette motor has aluminum heads therefore there is no crossover so an external tube is utilized.

My main question is will the motor run better or worse? Will the exhaust gases be trapped and not expell where everytime I let off the gas the engine will backfire and pop? Anyone who has expierience with this please post.

Thanks!
