okay on the way home at night i was driving my car and noticed a new noise that i am not fond of... it sounds like metal clanging together, and when i turn off the engine, it kinda does it crazy then stops, i havent had the chance to look at it yet but i will post what i find when i do, a friend told me its the timing chain, but wouldnt that make my car not run at all? the funny thing is.. is that i noticed that the car was being a little bit faster too, i have a 5.0 tpi... any, i mean ANY ideas on what it could be would really help me out.. thanks
-Blair
oh yeah, if i have the foot off the gas, and give it a little bit of gas then let go, it clangs pretty bad, then goes back to its normal every other second or so clanging..

i had a 72 monte carlo that had a similar thing happen the gear on the cam was pretty much half way gone but it gave kind of a clang noise almost like a rod knock but higher pitched and when you rev the engine it would go with the revs when i changed it out i also ended up replacing the timing cover because it wore a hole in it
i drove it home about 25 miles with it like this ..
got lucky

My 85 5.0 felt noticeably stronger the day before my timing chain spun off the sprocket completely. I figure it must have skipped a tooth and advanced or retarded the cam.
Didn't make any noise though - except when it failed completely and the pistons banged into the valves.

it does it while its runing, and the noise sounds kinda random.
so this is a pretty serious problem? sweet...

yup, get it to a shop and have it checked out. Or find a buddy who knows more to help you out
