Hi, I'm new to the forum and it loks like I'm going to spend the next couple of weeks catching up on my reading - there's a lot of great information here! I have an 86 IROC 5.0 TPI that I bought new. It has 38K miles, stock and has been off the road for the last 11 years. I put it back out this past month - changed the fuel pump, gas tank, exhaust, hoses, belts, fluids, O2 and MAF. It runs OK but I have some hesitation from a standing start. Also the 'ses' light is on with code 36 - MAP burn off and code 44 - O2 (lean). Appreciate any guidance on some next steps?

Before worrying about the trouble codes I'ed finish up the tuneup of parts you've started. You replaced the fuel pump, tank but no mention of fuel filter, plugs & wires, cap, and rotor, check air filter and check TPS reading. After setting that long I'ed also suggest pulling out your IAC and giveing it a good cleaning. I'ed also go around and check gaskets. It wouldn't hurt to check intake bolts for loosening up.Tranny filter and brake fluid and at the very least I'ed pull the plug out of the rear diff. and check level and condition of gear oil if not already done so. You didn't say weather or not it has set outside or inside. If outside then I would pull the wheeles and check rotors and give the brakes a good cleaning. From setting your wipers are probably junk. I would also grease the front suspension and give the rear rubber suspension bushings like control arms and panhard rod and e-brake cables a shot of PB Blaster. Finish getting it road ready and then disconnect the neg. battery cable for at least 10 minutes to clear the codes the take it for a good 30 minute drive and then if you still get codes ,I'ed address them then. Some people will say all that is over kill but If I had bought my car new and was bringing it back out after a long brake then this is what I would do.

Also your code 36 is MAF not MAP. Your car has Mas Air fuel injection which has a MAF sensor. 90 and up have a MAP sensor and Speed Density fuel injection.

Thanks transambill. I did leave out a few of the tuneup items, I have changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filters and greased the front end. Deep down I knew I should be checking the tranny filter and rear diff but I guess I'm getting overanxious. I agree with you - since I bought the car new I don't mind doing a bit of overkill so that's not a problem. This helps add to my to-do list this weekend, I was going to replace the burn off relay for the 36 code and check the manifold gasket as the possbile source of the 44 code, but you're right there are a few basics I need to square away first, it's just that I hate seeing that "ses" light. I have tried clearing the codes by disconnecting the neg cable and after about 5 minutes the ses lights up again.
Just a couple of other points - the car was inside the whole time, as a matter of fact it's been garaged it's whole life. Also my mistake I made a typo, the code 36 is a MAF burn off. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted as I plow through my to-do list.
