Tpi Pinging?

Hi all,

Really need some help here

I noticed once a sound that resembled pinging but was never sure. Today while driving slowly i could here a ditict metal sound, then i got to small hill. As i accelerated slowly it made the sound again and the "check engine" light came on

I guess i have to get the code out to know what it is.

How does one solve the pinging?

I used 89 octane fuel

Thanks,

Sam

We need more info about your car, what motor, what year, any mods??

My 91 TA with a 350 runs like poop on anything but 91 or higher fuel.

Oops, You are right.

Well it is a 1988 firebird transam with a 305 V8 TPI. I have owned the car for a year now and have not got a clue of what has been done. I dont think though that something was changed other than a KN filter put in.

It has 144,500 miles on it. it does not run rough or anything that may cause attention.

It has a dual fan system. the one fan runs all the time when key is in ignition and the other one starts when car is running.

Hope this help a bit

Sam

It sounds like the ecm is adding to much advance, but why? Try 92-3 first. I would wire your fans so they are not both on all of the time like that. You will have faster warm ups, In winter that will probably do more harm than good.

Well i got it all figured out now. I went to shucks and had them get the codes out of the computer. It turned out to be 13 O2 sensor

I planed on changing that earlier but never got to it so i guess now i know that it really is dying out ......

Do a complete typical tuneup (air filter, plugs, wires, set the static timing) and run fuel injector thru the fuel system. Change the fuel filter to while you're at it. You should have no problem running 89 octane. The pinging should go away.

But, this is how you get rid of pinging, if the pinging does not go away, you have a more serious problem on your hands.
